They are here to give you the inside scoop on preparing for San Antonio and the national competition. We encourage you to submit questions at any time during the broadcast using the GoToWebinar tool bar at the top right of your screen. We will go over questions at the end of this presentation. As a reminder, we are recording this Webinar and it will be available for download on the National web site in the Adviser’s Only area.!!!! LAUNCH POLL !!!!!!Ok. Before we begin, please take a moment to respond to the poll that is about to pop up on your screen. Let's take 15 seconds or so to answer. There will be just a brief pause here while everyone takes the poll. I'll tally the results and share them with you. (Pause a few seconds)Thank you. (Comment on who is in attendance.) Now, I'd like to introduce our first presenter, Richard Bowen, who is Conference Director at FBLA-PBL.
  • RICHARD:Welcome! I’m glad to have you aboard today. Today we will be highlighting the upcoming National Leadership Conference in San Antonio.PBL starts June 24 and FBLA starts June 29. Please note that all information we are sharing today is on our website at www.fbla.org/2012NLC.
  • To start, I would like to tell you about San Antonio. It all starts with the river…the RiverWalk! San Antonio’s one-of-a-kind River Walk is the lifeline of this charming city. It flows past our conference hotels and is lined with lively restaurants, historic villages, museums and—of course, the iconic Alamo. Beyond its banks you’ll find an exciting mix of diverse cultures and big-time attractions, like Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Sea World San Antonio. San Antonio can be very hot in the summer with a high average temperature of 90 degrees. Attendees should bring cool, comfortable clothing and shoes for outside activities and tours. San Antonio is known for its frequent, short bursts of liquid sunshine so you might want to pack your umbrella or rain poncho.
  • RICHARD:The conference hotels we are using for the PBL conference are the Marriott Rivercenter and Marriott Riverwalk. For FBLA we will add the Grand Hyatt, Hilton Palacio del Rio, Hyatt Regency, and La Quinta Inn & Suites Convention Center. All hotels are within walking distance of each other.State Hotel assignments for the PBL and FBLA program can be found on our Web site. Per the Board of Directors it is required that you stay at our designated conference hotels.A few tips… Marriott RiverCenter (RC) is connected to the RiverCenter Mall & Marriott RiverWalk (RW) is across the street RiverCenter; Grand Hyatt is next to the Convention Center and across from Marriott RW; Hilton Palacio del Rio is across the street from the other end of the convention center and RiverCenter Mall; Hyatt Regency is 1 block from the Mall; La Quinta C.C. is across the street from Marriott RC.Make sure you allow enough time to get from point A to point B.Walking time from the hotel to your competitions or workshops, and don’t forget elevator delays. The conference attire is Business but, You can wear comfortable shoes while walking to the conference and bring your dress shoes to attend all conference activities.
  • Richard:Now a little about Conference logistics: For PBL the Marriott RiverWalk will have Online Testing (Computer Lab) & a few WorkshopsThe Marriott RiverCenter will have all other conference activities and more workshops. The Marriott RiverCenter & RiverWalk are located across the street from each otherFBLA Conference logistics: Marriott RiverCenter - Competitive Events, Exhibits, MarketPlace, NLC & IFL Registration, Conference & Competitive Events Headquarters, Silent Auction, Tour & Photo Desks.Marriott RiverWalk - Online Testing (Computer Lab) & Competitive EventsThe Marriott RiverCenter & RiverWalk are located across the street from each otherGrand Hyatt - Institute for Leaders, Regional Meetings, Social Event, WorkshopsYou can navigate around the conference hotels by walking, the VIA trolley system, or take a ride on a Gondola for a narrated tour.
  • Richard: Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center – Hall C-D – will house the FBLA Opening General Session and Awards of Excellence Program.… and the PBL Session are at the Marriott RiverCenter.
  • Richard: Hall C & D are locate in the rear portion of the convention center.
  • Richard:Now let’s talk about our exciting program. The conference begins with our Premier program “Institute for Leaders”, an intensive day and a half training program which starts the day before each NLC.It’s where you will find FBLA-PBL’s most dedicated members, outstanding speakers, and powerful business leadership training. This year’s IFL is designed to celebrate innovative leadership.Who Should Attend IFL? FBLA-PBL officers, new or veteran adviser, aspiring entrepreneurs, or any future business leader who knows his/her ambitions will require innovative leadership should attend.Students will learn how to:Understand the Innovation Process Thrive in Diverse Settings Create Performance Plans Collaborate for ResultsFoster Relationships for Growth Master Communication TechniquesLead Meaningful Meetings Increase Goal Processing CapabilityMobilize Teams through Accountability Enhance Judgment and Decision MakingAdvance Career Readiness Lead with AuthenticityMore information on this exciting and new IFL program look in the NLC Guide which was sent to all the chapters in March and is found on our Web site.
  • Richard:We have two great Keynote speakers for our PBL and FBLA NLCs. Their motivational messages will help you gear up for your Gateway to Greatness.Dr. Randal D. Pinkett is our Keynote for the PBL conference. He was a winner of the Apprentice reality show with Donald Trump, and is also Founder, Chairman, and CEO of BCT Partners.Patrick Maurer is our keynote for the FBLA conference. He’s an Entertainer, Educator, and Motivator who empowers audiences of all ages throughout the United States and Canada. A description and bio for each speaker is available in the NLC Guide, WHICH can be found on our Web site.
  • Richard: Don’t Forget to join in the fun for the March of Dimes Mini-Walk. Held from 5:30pm-6:30pm. For PBL June 26, and July 1 for FBLA.We will once again have social events after the Awards of Excellence programs. June 27 for PBL and July 2 for FBLA. Both held from 9:30pm-11:30pm.Don’t forget, we also have a wide selection of discount tours and theme park tickets. Sign up online at our Web site. And now here’s Barbara to tell you more about the Competitive Events, Certifications, and some exciting new additions to this year’s conference.
  • BARBARA:This year we are offering both FBLA & PBL students and advisers an opportunity to make a difference in San Antonio by volunteering for community service activities. The goal for Volunteer San Antonio is to allow you a chance to effect community change outside your local hometown and leave the people of San Antonio knowing how caring FBLA-PBL members and advisers are. Sign up today on the conference Web site. Students and advisers must provide their own transportation or take public transportation for these opportunities.Another exciting opportunity for both FBLA advisers and students…
  • BARBARA:For the second year, we are offering FREE Microsoft Office Specialist 2010 exams as well as the Microsoft Technology Associate Exams to all ML & FBLA Advisers as well as FBLA students. Sign up online today on the NLC Conference page. The 2010 MOS suite includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook. A person is allowed to take up to three exams, in any combination. If space is available onsite, we will accept walk ins.
  • Both FBLA & PBL students, we are looking for the best of the best in the MOS exams to possibly be chosen to compete in Certiport’s 2012 Worldwide Competition on Microsoft Office, and could qualify to compete at the Worldwide Competition (WWC) Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 29—August 1, 2012!Advisers – if any of your students have tested at school for MOS 2010, they can enter the competition. You must register their score at the Web site listed on the slide. Registering your student's test score is Vital. If your student isn’t able to attend the NLC, this procedure must be completed to be considered. Also for the FBLA students attending the NLC, they can continue taking additional MOS tests to improve and hopefully be eligible to be one of the three FBLA-PBL competitors. Visit www.officecompetition.com /FBLA-PBL to learn more about the Worldwide Competition and start practicing and testing today. Students who advance to the 2012 WWC Finals in Las Vegas will compete against the brightest and best students from around the world, and are assured an incredible journey and unforgettable experience!
  • BARBARA:In addition, several certificaiton tests are given at a nominal fee for both FBLA & PBL.For FBLA we have Adobe, CompTia Strata, IC3 and new this year is Customer Service. For PBL we are offering all the same exams as for FBLA as well as Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) exams and a New exam in Retail Management.Throughout this year Certiport offered free exam vouchers to advisers. We are sorry but these vouchers MAY NOT be used at the national conference. ADVISERS WE ALSO HAVE SOMETHING FOR YOU.
  • BARBARA:Once again the Griffith Insurance Education Foundation and Ball State University are offering advisers free graduate credit or continuing education credits. To get the graduate credit, you must sign up before June 1 and for continuing education credit sign up by June 11 but you don’t have to attend the NLC to receive these credits. The course work must be completed by July 20, 2012.Now let’s talk a little about the competitive events.
  • BARBARA:Your state conferences are now over—the excitement is building and we can’t wait until we see everyone in San Antonio. So now you ask “what do I do next?”Once you check in at the conference, you will receive a NLC program. Read the program carefully and highlight your competition information to make sure you know the time, rooms, and date. The online tests start the afternoon of opening day at the Marriott Riverwalk for both FBLA & PBL and the preliminary performances are scheduled for PBL on June 25 and FBLA on June 30.For those in a performance event, the preliminary schedule will be posted by the registration area no later than 5:00 p.m. on opening day as well as on our Web site. A tentative time schedule is found in the conference guide mailed to all the schools in March as well as on our Web site.We start posting the final performance times after 8:00 pm on the second day of the conference. They will be posted by the registration area as well as on our Web site. Remember, final postings may be posted after midnight—it takes that long to verify the finalists. If you sign up for Twitter, we will tweet you when schedules are posted.
  • BARBARA: There are several changes this year to the PBL & FBLA events. For both groups, the top 15 individuals or teams, an equal number from each section, will advance to the final round. This will make competition much more suspenseful. For PBL remember all the Analysis & Decision Making events now have a role play component on day 3 for the top 15 scoring teams. Also just another reminder that Business Comm. is a two-part exam – writing prompt on opening day and the objective portion on the second day.We really only have one FBLA change—This is the first year that the students in Electronic Career Portfolio will present to the judgesLet’s review what we mean by sequestering. NEXT SLIDE
  • BARBARA:On the third day, many of the FBLA events are sequestered. We do not sequester for PBL. What this means is that students for these events will be in a holding room until their scheduled time to present. Once you get to the holding room, you will be given instructions on how this works. You may bring in food, reading material, cards, etc. Electronic devices are not allowed. You will be escorted to the restroom and may not talk to anyone outside the room or you will be disqualified. Look in the Chapter Management Handbook on page Competitive-12 for more detailed information.Just a few more hints to help get ready for competition… NEXT SLIDE
  • OK, YOU are the best of the best from around the country, and you are now competing at the NLC. Everyone is a winner, just making it to this level. You should be proud of your accomplishments. Now let’s review a few points—Make sure youReview the guidelines and rating sheets before coming to San AntonioFor the online tests, find several different textbooks and study the glossary and end of chapter summariesFor performance and interview events—practice, practice, practice
  • BARBARA: Remember FBLA members may only compete in one event at the NLC with one exception—they may also compete in one of the three chapter events—American Enterprise, Community Service and Partnership w/ Business. PBL members may compete in any 2 events. We do have receipt deadlines that must be adhered to for all prejudged and school-site production tests as shown on the slide. If materials are received after this date, they will not be judged. Note May 11 is receipt date for all reports, DVDs, etc. and May 18 is the receipt date for all school-site production tests. Check with your state adviser to see where you should send your materials. Make sure you send the proper number of required copiesWe are providing LCD projectors (but you can bring your own) but everyone, including ECP, E-business & Web Design must provide their own computer or other technology devices.Last but not least an important reminder – Your NLC registration must be paid in full before competing. Purchase orders do not constitute payment.Once you finished your competition, relax and enjoy yourself. Visit the exhibits, attend the workshops, and just enjoy the sun and fun of San Antonio. Now back to Richard
  • RICHARD: Thanks, Barb.Showing now are some deadline dates for the conference. I’ve Highlighted a few key deadlines. These can also be found in the 2012 NLC Guide on page 4.They include deadlines for: Internship and candidate applications; registration and voting: and Hotel Reservation cutoff. If these dates are not met, your students may not be eligible to vote, run for a national office, or have events prejudged. Now here’s Marisa to give a quick overview of the NLC dress code.
  • Marisa: Thanks, Richard. Before we end…just a few housekeeping notes. Please remember that NLC attendees are required to be in Business Attire throughout the conference. This applies to advisers as well. The only exception is the social event. Just to clarify, open-toe shoes and sling backs are allowed but flip flops or bare feet are NOT. So ladies, please don’t be a slave to fashion. Buy comfortable dress shoes that you can bare to wear throughout the day. <CLICK MOUSE> This is not a pretty picture.
  • MARISA: Enhance your experience by working as an intern at the NLC in San Antonio! The meeting planner interns help national staff with conference logistics and headquarter’s office management. To participate, it is necessary for you to be available during the majority of the NLC. For those planning on attending the Institute for Leaders, we’re also is offering the opportunity for a Leadership Internship at IFL 2012! Top applicants will receive an all-access pass to IFL leadership experts, share innovative lessons from IFL via social media, and have the opportunity to speak at the IFL closing session. To learn more and apply for either of these internships, visit www.fbla-pbl.org/2012NLC.
  • Marisa: OK . . . We had a number of questions submitted during the presentation, and we’ll start getting to those now. If we run out of time, wewill e-mail you individually to answer any question that we were not able to get to.The first question . . . .
  • Marisa: OK. That’s all the time we have for today. Don’t forget, all our previously recorded webinars are archived on our Web site in the Advisers’ Area and a few are located on our YouTube channel and the Multimedia Gallery of our web site, including the titles you see here.Ok. I’d like to thank each of you for your participation today. Goodbye for now and I hope you have a great week!
