Family Farmers: Challenges and Recommendations Family Farmers: Challenges and Recommendations Presentation Transcript

    • Family Farmers: Challenges and Recommendations Daniel Gad Ethiopian Horticultural Cooperatives Board Member October 11, 2013 CFS Side Event
    • Defining family farming Limited access to land, capital, and other resources Predominant use of family labor The farming/forestry/fish eries/aquaculture is the main source of household income
    •  Innovative financing  Innovations for sustainable intensification Challenges faced by family farmers  Access to markets  Gender roles
    • Reflections and Recommendations  More attention to this model of farming at the global level, especially to the division of gender roles in the model, as well as the role of young farmers  More investment is needed in family farming to allow it to continue to be a viable model of farming and livelihood  Investment is part of the answer to improve productivity in agriculture, but it is not the only answer  Finance is also a part of the solution to food insecurity, but the whole picture of family farm income needs to be put together locally to meet local and regional markets… One size does not fit all.
