Rainfed areas of NENA • A great proportion of the NENA region’s agricultural livelihoods are based on rainfed farming systems; • 80% of food Production is dependent on low and extremely variable rainfall; • Water resources are scarce; • High yield gap • A conjunctive use of the available water resources: Supplemental irrigation (SI)
  3. 3. Definition and concept of SI / DSI • Supplemental irrigation = Addition of limited amounts of water to crops, in order to improve and stabilize yields during times when rainfall fails to provide sufficient moisture for normal plant growth.

Case study: Water Benchmark project in Tadla, Morocco Purpose •to develop and test, with the full participation of rural communities, water management options that will increase water productivity, optimize water use and that are economically viable, socially acceptable and environmentally sound.
