Project profile• Donor: Italian Government – Phase 1: US $ 1,600,000 (GCP/VIE/027/ITA) – Phase 2: US $ 1,200,000 (GCP/VIE/035/ITA)• Executing Agency: FAO• Implementing Agency: – Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Quang Nam Province• Project sites: 6 communes in – Tien Phuoc district – Phu Ninh district

  • 4. Development Objective“To help reduce poverty in the rural areas and promote conservation of natural resources through the development of sustainable, high quality, MOAF systems.”
  • 5. Immediate objective 1 To develop sustainable, MOAF systems forincreased production and sale of wood and other agroforestry (AF) productsOutput 1. Forest gardens are established and home gardens developedOutput 2. Village nurseries are established and producing high quality seedlingsOutput 3. Farmers trained on AF principles, technologies, and strategiesOutput 4. Extension staff familiar with participatory extension approaches and are providing adequate and timely extension services to farmers
  • 6. Immediate objective 2 To help farmers develop AF-based enterprises and improve marketing of AF productsOutput 5. Cam Ha Cooperative and other farmer marketing groups are organized and engaged in businessOutput 6. Feasible rural enterprises and other livelihood opportunities established/strengthenedOutput 7. Market Research Information System (MRIS) developed at DARD

Strategy A: Imbibe & communicate main message in all activitiesMOAF enterprises with responsive support systems will: a) Increase production of goods and services; b) Increase values of land, social, and financial assets; c) Reduce poverty while conserving natural resources in Quang Nam Province

The MOAF system ... how will it work? The components of the AF system (including: home and forest gardens, village nurseries, microfinance groups & agri- and forest-based enterprises) competitively produce goods and services which respond to demand of buyers, users & consumers Province, Districts and Communes align support systems – especially the extension & market research information delivery services – with needs of farmers, program implementers & policy makers

Strategy B:Develop and/or strengthen market-driven AF enterprises 5 types of market-driven AF enterprises: 1) Home gardens – households 2) Forest gardens – households 3) Village nurseries – households 4) Savings & credit associations – groups 5) Agri- & forestry-based enterprises – groups Customer-Oriented Support Systems at Commune, District and Provincial levels • Extension & MRIS support system – Province, Districts & Communes • Infrastructure - districts • Social and health services - districts • Education - districts • Others - government and NGOs

Home gardens including essential oil, grains, meat, Hoi An City, Danang City poultry Middlemen,2. Forest gardens Pulpwood, saw timber, non-timber local sawmills (27 in Tien Phuoc, XX in Phu Ninh) Fruit seedlings, suckers, seedlings of Garden owners,3. Village nurseries long-term forest species, stock home owners seedlings, skills4. Microfinance – Micro-credit services, relending, Farmers, coops S/C associations advisory, training5. Agri- & forestry- Processed products, Tam Ky, Tien Ky, farmers based enterprises merchandise goods (i.e. fertilizer)6. State extension & Farmers & Services, information MRI Systems Decision makers
