Revolution Innovation xFREIGHTLINER | Concept TruckFreightliner’s Revolution Innovationtruck is being shown at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Kentuckyand it making maaaaad waves andhoping to reimagining the facecommercial trucking. Take everythingthat you think of, when you thinkabout a long haul truck and long haultrucking, then take a big fat eraser tothose thoughts and then think aboutwhat it would look like, if you did it.This is going to sound weird, but Ialways had this lightweight desire tobe a truck driver
Freightliner Innovation TruckA Legacy of SolutionsSince its inception more than 60 years ago,DTNA has been committed to its core values ofinnovation, quality and meeting customers’needs. From its initial launch of the industry’sfirst lightweight aluminum cab to the unveilingof the Cascadia in 2007, DTNA has continuedto develop products that push the boundariesto enhance the driving experience and impactthe bottom line. We always combine ourextensive global engineering resources withour proven industry knowledge to create smartsolutions,” said Boeckenhoff. “We build all ofour products with the customer in mind, andthe Innovation Truck is no exception.”
Freightliner Innovation TruckAerodynamicsBuilding on the highly successful Cascadia platform, theInnovation Truck reflects greater refinement inaerodynamics with the addition of rear wheel fairings tosmooth the airflow around the rear wheels, under bodypanels that smooth air flow under the chassis, a roofdeflector to direct air over the trailer, and a front airsplitter incorporated into the front bumper to pass airaround the truck. The Innovation Truck also replaces the mirrors with sideview cameras to further reduce drag. The camerasystem improves the field of view, eliminates blind spots, and reduces the typical “fish eye” effect. Together theseenhancements improve the airflow over, under, andaround the vehicle – resulting in further fuel savings. What makes the Innovation Truck so aerodynamic is notjust its shape, but the entire package – from bumper totail lights,” said Boeckenhoff.
Freightliner Innovation TruckMechatronic SystemsMechatronics integrates the electronic andmechanical worlds into systems that help toimprove vehicle function and driverinteraction. One such system is the RunSmartPredictive Cruise™ system. A world premierefor heavy-duty trucking industry, this systemoffers significant fuel savings by combining thelatest in GPS technology with digital mappingto provide a 3D profile of the road ahead. Thetruck evaluates the upcoming road profile morethan one mile in advance and determines themost fuel efficient vehicle speed. TheRunSmart Predictive Cruise systemshowcases our commitment to shape thefuture of transportation,” said Boeckenhoff.“And with Freightliner, the future starts rightnow.”
The ParkSmart™ HVAC System featured on the InnovationTruck is now available for the Cascadia. The system provides anintegrated system solution for emission-free cooling and highlyefficient heating without engine idling. Operating from a secondbank of batteries, the ParkSmart system provides 8-10 hours ofcooling and up to 34 hours in the heating mode, using a diesel-fired coolant heater. The advantage of an electrically-driven HVAC system is thatshore power extends operating time while eliminating emissions. As showcased on the Innovation Truck, a fuel cell that produces3-5 kilowatts of power is enough power to operate convenienceitems during a 34-hour reset period.Power Systems
Alternative energy conpentsIn both business areas, MAN has been apioneer in the use of natural gas and biofuelsright from the start. In the Power Engineeringbusiness area for example, a plant built byMAN in the town of Fritzens (Austria) uses oldcooking fat to generate power for around 3,000households. And at MAN’s wind-diesel powerplant on the Caribbean island of Bonaire, thediesel engines only spring to life in a deadcalm or in gale force winds. In the future, it isplanned to run the engines on fuel producedfrom algae, making the vision of CO2-neutralpower for the whole island a reality.
