  • (Centre for Pastoral Leadership and Management Training) ESSENTIALS OF THE PASTORAL MINISTRY (CPL 01) (The Pastoral Ministry in the Old Testament) Ezekiel A. Odeyemi The Meaning of the word The Encyclopaedia Britannica defines him as one who tends sheep, a pastor. To pastor is to guard and guide. It is to pilot, steer, conduct, show, direct, lead, and to route. In the literal sense, he is one who cares for a flock of sheep. The Hebrew word, ra’ah, is translated to shepherd, feed, tend, to pasture, to cause one’s heard to graze. Ra’ah has to do with tending and caring for one’s animals, particularly by providing them with good pasture. This verb occurs more than 170 times in the OT. From ra’ah (verb), we got ro’eh, which is translated ‘shepherd’ (The New Spirit-filled Life Bible) The exaltedness of the position of a shepherd  David saw God as his Shepherd—Ps 23:1  God was called the Shepherd of Israel—Ps 80:1; Isa 40:10-11 (From these two passages, a pastor has personal and corporate roles to play in the lives of his/her people)  Moses was a shepherd—Isa 63:11  Our Lord Jesus called Himself the good shepherd—John 10:1  Jesus Christ was called the Chief Shepherd—1 Pet 2:25; 5:4  Shepherds are leaders of the people The term ro’eh was used for the following classes of people in the OT: Priests— Prophets— Kings— 1
