Career Options for Medical Assistants• By using the skills and training you acquire to become a medical assistant, many career opportunities in the medical field open up to you.• As medical offices and clinics all over the country continue to grow and expand, trained medical assistants are needed to fill a variety of roles.

Medical Records and Health Information Technicians• Records and Information Technician is one of the very few jobs in the medical field that doesn’t require interactions with patients. • Medical assistants in this position are valued for performing important work “behind the scenes.”• Every time a patient interacts with a medical office (such as for tests, appointments, prescriptions, treatments, etc.) documentation is created. A Medical Records and Health Information Technician’s job is create, maintain, and analyze this documentation.

Types of Records• Most medical records are stored and organized via an electronic health records (EHR) system. – Becoming skilled with EHR software will be critical for your success.• Common types of records you’ll work with include: – Patient personal information (name, address, social security number, etc.) – Patient insurance information – Medical histories – Test results – Diagnoses – Prescriptions

How to Get the Job• When hiring for a records and information technician position, medical offices tend to look for candidates with the following skills and personal traits: – Experience with organizing, understanding, and coding medical records. The Medical Billing class at Everest College will prepare you. – Detail-centric work ethic for accurately recording patient information. – Excellent communication skills. Even though you won’t interact with patients, you will need to discuss records and data with physicians, finance personnel, and other relevant people. – Technological skills and experience. Navigating the EHR software used by the medical office will be a main component of doing your job. You usually don’t need to have experience the EHR system (offices commonly use different software), but you should be adept with technology.
