  5. 5. History of Electricity in LatviaHistory of Electricity in LatviaIn Latvia people started to use the electricalenergy in 1970. The first electricity companieswere found in 19.-20. century. 1939 – thebeginning of Latvian power system. In 1955more power stations began to operate.
  6. 6. About electricity nowadaysAbout electricity nowadaysIn Latvia there are still some estates where isno electricity (in Latvia 0,1 % people do not haveelectricity), because :•some houses are locatedfar from inhabited centers;• people do not have moneyto pay for the electricity.
  7. 7. HEPPsHEPPsHEPP is power station which uses water toproduce electricity. Hydroelectric powerstations produce about 7% of the world energy.
  8. 8. Small HEPPs in LatviaSmall hydropower stations began to developin 1950. From 1945 to 1960 were built 20small rural HEPPs . In 1998 35 smallHEPPs operated in Latvia .

ADVANTAGESADVANTAGESIT IS A RENEWABLE ENERGY+ Hydroelectric produces much electricity;+ Energy is rather cheep;+ The pollution is minimal;+Stations can operate for many years;+ They are more economic for home owners than solarpower;+ People will have workplace (decrease the rate ofunemployment);+A HEP produces about 500 Kw per hour, but each familyconsumes about 200 kw per month.+ In this river is little fish, so the fish will not suffer as ithappens on larger rivers during the spawn (for example,salmons)
