  16. 16. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum2. Reflection of 2012 Point of Departure:  In the course of the debate about the introduction of the 2012 European Championships, concerns were expressed by the high performance leaders (Head Coaches, Performance Directors, etc) of the European federations.  Their concerns were primarily about successful training preparation towards the Olympics.  Taking into consideration the course of the 2012 season up to the European Championships in Helsinki, we see that the federations took different approaches.
  17. 17. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum2. Reflection of 2012 Point of Departure:  There were federations that deemed the European Championships as an important and binding step for their top athletes on the way to the Olympic Games.  Some federations let their potential Olympic medallists decide by themselves whether they wanted to participate in the European Championships or not.  Russia and Slovenia decided not to take part with the potential medallists.  As to the scheduling of the national championships we saw different options.

  26. 26. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum2. Reflection of 2012 • DELIVERING ON THE DAY Medals or Season’s Best (or better) During London 2012 On average only 29.1% of European athletes „delivered“ in London. Why did the European women deliver better than the men? Why are the Americans and Jamaicans delivering better than the Europeans? Is it the fault of the ECH? What implications does this have for our performance management and coaching systems?

  38. 38. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum4. Conclusions Breakout Groups CONCLUSIONS Group A 1. Why did some of your top athletes not compete in Helsinki ECH2012? Main reasons: - Injured athletes and risk of injury for top athletes - Athletes and coaches own decision to participate - ECH not mandatory for OGs qualification - Too close to NCH or Trials - Different system in OGs and ECH concerning Q rounds (eg. SP) - Traditional and successful training conceptions (RUS) - Climate problem and late start of season
  39. 39. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum4. Conclusions Breakout Groups CONCLUSIONS Group A 2. Why did the americans and the jamaicans deliver better in London than the Europeans? Not enough statistical data, but some individual positions 3. Considering the data given about WJCH, do you consider that World/European Junior Championships should be questioned? To continue with the EJCH and study the U23 calendar 4. From the technical point of view, when do you think is the best date to organise Amsterdam ECH2016? a) 29 June – 3 July: 2 b) 6 – 10 July: 4 c) Other: 2 (after the OGs), 2 not defined yet
  40. 40. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum4. Conclusions Breakout Groups CONCLUSIONS Group B 1. Why did some of your top athletes not compete in Helsinki ECH2012? • Nearly all top athletes took part, with the exception of those injured. • Some of the top athletes competing in different disciplines than their «normal» events. i.e. Combined events athletes. • Coach perception is also an important factor
  41. 41. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum4. Conclusions Breakout Groups 2. Why did the americans and the jamaicans deliver better in London than the Europeans? • School system • Volume of athletes • Different start to the season • Event based success (sprints vs technical events) • The trial system removes the doubts about selection and can help with the mental preparation for the top events. • System of performance management
  42. 42. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum4. Conclusions Breakout Groups 3. Considering the data given about WJCH, do you consider that World/European Junior Championships should be questioned? • Keep the junior championships, important to be attractive vs other sports for the young. • Dont need the youth championships. • Need a careful balance
  43. 43. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum4. Conclusions Breakout Groups 4. From the technical point of view, when do you think is the best date to organise Amsterdam ECH2016? a) 29 June – 3 July: 6 b) 6 – 10 July: 2 c) Other: 1 (September?)
  44. 44. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum4. Conclusions Breakout Groups CONCLUSIONS Group C 1. Why did some of your top athletes not compete in Helsinki ECH2012? • All of them competed with top athletes with the exception of injuries and top junior focused on world junior championships.
  45. 45. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum4. Conclusions Breakout Groups 2. 46. 46. European Athletics Head Coaches/High Performance Forum4. Conclusions Breakout Groups 3. Considering de data given about WJCH, do you consider that World/European Junior Championships should be questioned? • The whole group is in favor of keeping the juniors championships as it is a step of development and not a final objective.
