  • Nbr de pages 4 Page 1Press release13thIpsos - Europ Assistanceholiday barometerUnder pressure from the economic crisis, Europeans’plans to go away on holiday this year are dropping onceagain, this time to the lowest level in 8 years.No more than 62% of French people now plan to leavethis summer (-8 points) but their budget remains stable.Martin VIAL, CEO of the Europ Assistance Group, has released the findings of the 13thIpsos– Europ Assistance barometer on Europeans’ intentions and concerns in relation toholidays.Conducted by Ipsos at the request of the Europ Assistance Group among a sample of 4,048Europeans (French, Germans, British, Italians, Spaniards, Belgians and Austrians), this referencesurvey conducted over the phone and published for the thirteenth consecutive year aims toproduce an annual estimate of the departure plans of residents of the countries concerned, alongwith their motivations, destinations and the types of holiday they favour.On the occasion of the 50thanniversary of the creation of Europ Assistance in 1963, this latestIpsos-Europ Assistance barometer is also an opportunity to review the improvements thatEuropeans have perceived in the tourism field over the past 50 years and to have them projectinto the next 5 decades.Europeans’ departure plans are once again on a downwardtrend in 2013 (-4 points) with a very clear drop compared to thelate 2000sThe crisis seems to affect Europeans’ departure plans this year with no more than 54% planning toleave on holiday at least once this summer (between June and September inclusive).Thursday30may2013-00:00
  • No. of pages 4 Page 2For the second year in a row, departure plans have declined (-4 points compared to 2012 and -12points compared to 2011), reaching a new record drop in the barometer. This is in fact the lowestlevel in 8 years.The scope of the crisis in Spain and Italy is particularly visible in departure plans, which havedropped even more sharply this year (42% of Spaniards plan to go away as opposed to 51% in 2012and 65% in 2011; 53% for the Italians as opposed to 63% in 2012 and 78% in 2011). Due to a lesstense economic and social situation, the Germans’ (52%, -3 points) and Austrians’ (57%, -2 points)departure plans seem to have stabilised.For the first time since the economic crisis began, the French are particularly affected this year.62% of them now claim to want to leave on holiday this year, i.e. 8 points less than last year (70%),a record for the country since 2005 (63%).Europeans’ 2013 holiday budget remains stable at 2,100 € onaverageAs with the two previous years, although their departure plans are on a downward trend, those Europeanswho claim to be planning to leave are not generally considering a reduction in their holiday budget.The budget devoted to the 2013 summer holiday (covering transport, accommodation, meals,leisure activities, etc.) remains at the same level as the previous year at a figure of 2,100 € (asopposed to 2,104 €), with a few disparities according to nationality all the same.Hence, the Belgians (2,508€, +101€) and Austrians (2,505€, + 325€) – who have the biggest holidaybudgets of all Europeans – think they will allocate a bigger amount than last year to their holidays, while forthe Germans (2,343€, -129€) and Spaniards (1,607€, -256 €), the trend is reversed. The Italians for theirpart think they will maintain their holiday budget (1,761€, +71€), and the same applies for the French withan average budget of 2,140€, a slight rise of 1% (+28€) compared to 2012 (2,112€).For the French, a special relationship with holidaysThis year once again, despite a clear downward trend (62%, -8 points), the French are still the Europeanswith the highest level of intention to leave on holiday. Moreover, only 7% of them are willing to savemoney on this item. With a budget that has remained stable over the years, despite an increasinglytense economic climate, this behaviour expresses the special relationship that the French havewith their holidays, which they are intent on keeping.
  • No. of pages 4 Page 3Europe is still Europeans’ primary destination for the summer81% of European holidaymakers (+2 points compared to 2012) claim to want to spend their summerholiday in Europe.This year, France is once again the leading destination chosen by Europeans. It will welcome 18% (asopposed to 20% in 2012) of European tourists, followed closely by Italy (17% as opposed to 18%) andSpain (14%, stable).Logically, in certain countries such as Italy (70%, stable) or Spain (65%, +12 points), where the climate is milder,a majority of citizens will stay in their own country. National tourism is also particularly well developed –even if it doesn’t quite reach the same levels - in France where 60% of French people (-7 points) willremain in their own country this year.The Internet and social networks are being used more than everfor holiday preparation56% of Europeans now browse the web to make their reservations (planes, trains, hotels, hotel-clubs…), afigure that has been constantly progressing for several years (28% in 2005, i.e. a score that has doubled).The British (66%) are the most active on the Internet in terms of booking their holidays, followed by theBelgians (58%), French (57%) and Germans (55%).And 20% of Europeans now claim that they consult or are thinking of consulting the social networks inchoosing their destination. The Spaniards (32%) use the social networks the most for getting informed,followed by the British (27%), Italians (20%), Germans (19%), Austrians (14%), Belgians (14%) andFrench (7%).On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of Europ Assistance in 1963, this 2013Ipsos-Europ Assistance Holiday Barometer also included several questions aimed at evaluatingwhat Europeans think of the key improvements in the tourism field over the past 50 years, andwhat they would like for the next 5 decades
  • No. of pages 4 Page 4A century of tourism: improvements in travel and holidays overthe past 50 years and wish-list for the half-century to come1963-2013: transport, the Internet and insurance, the winning trio of the pasty fifty years.The development of air transport (72%), the possibility of organising your holidays over the Internet(71%) and the fact of being insured, assisted and protected in the case of a problem during theholidays (69%) come top of the list of improvements that Europeans consider to be most important inthe field of tourism and holidays over the past 50 years.The fact that an increasing number of people can now go on holiday (67%) or leave more often (65%)along with the reduction in the price of travel (58%) come next in Europeans’ ranking.2013-2063: what are Europeans dreaming of for the half-century to come?
