Weather & climate

 1. 1. Weather & Climate!
 2. 2. Weather Time!

Tornado Chaos!

 3. 3. Weather vs. Climate !

Weather is the state of the atmosphere over a SHORT period of time, normally day-to-day.

VS.

Climate is the types of weather over a LONG period of time at a specific place.

 4. 4. Challenge !

It is a bit sunny today, but it is also a bit cold.

Weather or Climate?

WEATHER!

During the summer, it is usually hot and very sunny.

Weather or Climate?

CLIMATE!

 5. 5. Elements of Climate !

Elements of climate are what affects and changes the weather.

They are:

Temperature - Wind

Precipitation - Atomspheric pressure

 6. 6. Elements of Change

Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness.

- Measured using a thermometer.

Precipitation is the water that falls from the sky to land.

Measured using a pluviometer.

Atmospheric pressure is the weight of the air that pushes against the earth

Measured using a barometer.

Wind is the movement of air in the atmosphere.

Measured using a wind vane (N, S, E, W)

 7. 7. Elements of Change
 8. 8. Factors that Influence Climate

Latitude: horizontal.

Ex.) Countries near the Equator are hotter because the Sun shines directly on it.

The distance from bodies of water .

Ex.) Areas near water are much cooler because water takes longer to get hot.

Altitude: the height of a place.

Ex.) Places at higher altitudes are colder.

 9. 9. Challenge !

What is this red latitudinal line called?

The Equator!

What two continents are near the Equator?

Africa & South America!

Is it hot or cold near the Equator? And why?

It is hot because the Sun shines directly on the Equator.

 10. 10. Challenge !

Fuengirola vs. Granada

Sierra Nevada
 11. 11. Weather Time!

Hail Storm Madness!

 12. 12. Earth’s Climate Zones: HOT!

Equatorial Climates

High temperatures and lots of precipitation.

Ex.) Equatorial Guinea

 13. 13. Earth’s Climate Zones: HOT!

Tropical Climates

High temperature, lots of precipitation in summer, & dry winters.

Amazon Rainforest

Desert

Little precipitation & VERY hot temperatures.

Sahara Desert

 14. 14. Earth’s Climate Zones: TEMPERATE! (moderate)

Oceanic- France

Mild temperatures, A LOT of precipitation

Mediterranean- Costa del Sol/California

Mild winters, hot summers, & some rain in spring & autumn.

Continental- Shanghai, China

Cold winters, hot summers, & not much of precipitation.

 15. 15. Earth’s Climate Zones: COLD!

Mountain Climate

Cold with more precipitation in high altitudes.

Rocky Mountains

Polar Climate

VERY low temperatures, low precipitation (snow)

Antartica

 16. 16. Challenge !

Polar

Oceanic

Equatorial

Mediterranean

Tropical

Continental

Hot Climate?

Temperate?

Cold Climate?
