Analysis of coupling agent
Traditional analysis reports silane levels as the calculated amount of silane added in the initial formulation. Esstech uses both quantitative and qualitative methods of measuring the actual silane that is bound to the glass surface.
Quantitative:
Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) measures bound silane while differentiating from residual moisture via thermal cycling of the sample.
Qualitative:
The “Float” test demonstrates that all glass particles have been coated. Properly treated particles will remain hydrophobic and float on the water surface
Failure indicates incomplete surface coverage &/or bonding failure, which will translate into composite properties
