  • EDUCATION COMMITMENT TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION FOCUS ON BAMBOO BY: RAPHAEL C. FONTANILLA, Ph. D.,CEO VI
    • The education sector is vulnerable to various environmental hazards that result in:
    • -destruction of school buildings, facilities & educational materials;
    • -suspension of classes, disruption of learning process;
    • -teachers overburdened in the aftermath of disasters; and
    • -schools as evacuation centers suffer damages putting strain on resources
    • Executive Order # 879 issued by the President of the Philippines creating the Philippine Bamboo Industry Development Council (PBIDC) is very timely and fitting to address the rising cost of construction materials .
    • The EO promotes the Bamboo Industry Development Project and directs the use of Bamboo for at least twenty five ( 25%) percent of the desks and other furniture requirements of public elementary and secondary schools and prioritizing the use of bamboo in furniture, fixtures and other construction requirements of government facilities and allocating funds therefore and other purposes.
    • With the issuance of an Unnumbered Executive Order, series 2011 by the Office of the Provincial Governor of the Province of South Cotabato creating the South Cotabato Bamboo Industry Development Council and the Institutionalization of the Kawayan Festival, the Department of Education, Division of South Cotabato, commits to environmental protection with focus on Bamboo
    • Why Focus on BAMBOOS?
    • Bamboo planting and its proper usage will significantly contribute to the mitigation of climate change considering:
    • - its carbon capture capability;
    • - cheaper reforestation cost;
    • - a green product;
    • - can easily be transformed to cash crop for farmers & community- based forest management agreement holders who engage in its cultivation thereby alleviating poverty; and
    • - alternative for plastic, metal and wood
  • COMMITMENT OF DEP ED, DIV OF SOUTH COTABATO
    • 1. Procure the equivalent of at least twenty percent (20%) of the annual school desks and arm chair requirement of all public elementary and secondary schools
    • 2. Massive planting/growing/caring of bamboos in vacant spaces in the school premises and establishment of mini-forests;
    • 3. Identifying suitable vacant spaces in the community especially watershed areas where bamboo planting/growing and caring activities will be done and where mini-forests will be established;
    • 4. Schools will be directed to establish its own bamboo nurseries to ensure enough supplies of planting materials;
    • 5. Bamboos planted outside the school should have signages indicating that it is being adopted and maintained by the school and other stakeholders, as well as labeled for monitoring purposes;
    • 6. Research and transfer of technologies on bamboos be undertaken through Science Investigatory Projects;
    • 7. Intensify Awareness Campaign on Environmental Protection Focus on Bamboos through for symposia, and seminars to be initiated in school premises together with partner agencies and other organizations;
    • 8. Engage students in bamboo-based projects
    • 9. Involve youth-led organizations as SGC, Yes-O, BSP, GSP etc;
    • 10. Establish linkages and partnerships with stakeholders such as LGU, DENR, Brgy Officials, NGOs, for advice , support and supply of planting materials;
    • 11 . Support Kawayan products as cost - effective and attractive complement or alternative for plastic, metal and wood materials;
    • 12. Support the Kawayan Festival of the province.
