THE ART OF SCIENCE -
GRADE 4 STUDENTS MAKE MASKS
Observational
drawing and
art are an im-
portant part
of science for
students at St.
Catherine of
Siena School.
To conclude
an interdisci-
plinary project
that combined
the study of animals with techniques and design elements
from the visual arts, St. Catherine's Grade 4 students created
masks of the animals they observed. Designing the masks
was one part of the multi-step project that required them to
select and study an animal, read books about it, discuss it in
class, make a hypothesis about why animals are often used as
themes in mask-making cultures, produce a written report,
make an oral presentation to classmates, and finally con-
struct the masks. Through the project, students learned
about scientific observation and drawing, animal adapta-
tions, and each animal's habits.
GRADE 4 STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT
DENTAL HEALTH
Last week, Grade
4 students had a
v i s i t f ro m S t .
Catherine of Siena
School alum John
Costello, a second
year student at
BU School of Den
tal Medicine, and
his classmate
Alyssa Mazzoli.
The purpose of
teach students about the importance of oral
highly interactive presentation gave students
information about oral hygiene, dental health, and nutrition.
Students dressed up as types of teeth - molars, canines, and
incisors - and got paper "germs" stuck to their costumes
based on what they ate for lunch. Brushing with a giant
toothbrush was not enough to dislodge all the germs. They
needed to floss as well. At the end of the presentation, they
had all the information they needed to avoid sugary foods
and to choose healthy snacks instead.
ST. CATHERINE'S SCHOOL MUSIC GROUP
PERFORMS AT CLARKE HOUSE IN WESTWOOD
St. Catherine of Siena
School students from
Grade 3 - Grade 7
formed a musical group
this year and now use
their weekend time to
perform for seniors at
local area nursing
homes. Last weekend,
the students were at
Kindred Clarke House
at Fox Hill Village in
Westwood to perform
instrumental and vocal
music for residents.
Students see this as an
example of how they
can make their school's
motto - "See Christ in
Others. Be Christ for
Others" - come alive.
Middle school students - Jennifer
Barron, Nicholas Chehwan, Arian-
na De Leon, Brittany Christopher,
and Samantha Barry
Grade 5 - Michael Scuderi and
