• 1. What are Fractions? Erica Steiner EDU 352 Profession Rollins February 15, 2012
 • 2. What Are Fractions?

Fractions are a small or tiny part, amount, or proportion of something (The Free Dictionary).

 • 3. Let’s start by doing some counting … How many hexagons are here? But what if there was only part of the hexagon? 1 2 3 5 4 How would we count it?
 • 4. We’ll use FRACTIONS! If we break the hexagon in to 6 equal pieces and took out 1 piece, what would we have? We would have 1 piece out of 6 pieces. Here is how we right it… We read this as “one sixth”
 • 5. How much of the hexagon is GREEN? 5 pieces out of 6 total pieces are GREEN… so 5 / 6 of the hexagon is GREEN
 • 6. How much is PURPLE ? 1 piece out of 6 total pieces are PURPLE … so 1 / 6 of the hexagon is PURPLE
 • 7. Let’s try another one…

How much of the rectangle is yellow ?

4 pieces out of 9 pieces…

4/9 (This is read as “four nineths”)

How much of the rectangle purple ?

5 pieces out of 9 pieces…

5/9 (This is read as “five nineths”)
