  • There was once upon a time a little boy who was tiredof playing with his toys and tired of his books and puzzles.
  • What shall I do? He asked his mother. And his mother,who always knew fun things for little boys to do, said“Why not go and find a little red house with a chimney,with a little door and a little star inside”.
  • This really made the little boy wonder. Usually his motherHad good ideas, but he thought that this one was verystrange.“Which way shall I go?” He asked his mother. “I don’tknow where to find a little red house with a chimney, witha little door and a star inside”. View slide
  • “Go down the lane past the farmer’s house and over thehill”, said his mother, “and then hurry back as soon as youcan and tell me all about your journey”.So the little boy put on his hat and his jacket and startedout. He had not gone very far down the lane when he cameto a little girl dancing and singing along in the sunshine. View slide
  • “Do you know where I shall find a little red house with achimney, with a little door and a star inside?”, asked thelittle boy. The little girl laughed. “Ask my father thefarmer”, she said. “Perhaps he knows”.So the little boy went on until he came to the great brownbarn. The farmer stood in the doorway looking out overthe green and yellow fields.
  • "Do you know where I can find a little red house with achimney and with a little door and a star inside?" askedthe little boy of the farmer. The farmer laughed too. “Idon’t know, I never saw one”, he chuckled, “but you canask the animals”.
  • So the little boy went on farther still, until he came tothe cow. ”Please, Mrs. Cow”, said the little boy. “Can youhelp me? I’m looking for a little red house with a chimney.It has a little door and when it’s opened up, there’s a littlestar inside”.“MOO, MOO”, said the cow. “I don’t’ know, I never sawone. But you can ask the sheep”.
  • So the little boy went on farther still, until he came tothe sheep. ”Please, Mrs. Sheep”, said the little boy. “Canyou help me? I’m looking for a little red house with achimney. It has a little door and when it’s opened up,there’s a little star inside”.“BAA, BAA”, said the sheep. “I don’t’ know, I never sawone. But you can ask the pig”.
  • So the little boy went on farther still, until he came tothe pig. ”Please, Mr. Pig”, said the little boy. “Can you helpme? I’m looking for a little red house with a chimney. Ithas a little door and when it’s opened up, there’s a littlestar inside”.“OINK, OINK”, said the pig. “I don’t’ know, I never sawone. But you can ask the duck”.
  • So the little boy went on farther still, until he came tothe duck. ”Please, Mr. Duck”, said the little boy. “Can youhelp me? I’m looking for a little red house with a chimney.It has a little door and when it’s opened up, there’s a littlestar inside”.“QUACK, QUACK”, said the duck. “I don’t’ know, I neversaw one. But you can ask the horse”.
  • So the little boy went on farther still, until he came tothe horse. ”Please, Mr. Horse”, said the little boy. “Canyou help me? I’m looking for a little red house with achimney. It has a little door and when it’s openedup, there’s a little star inside”.“WEHEE, WEHEE”, said the duck. “I don’t’ know, I neversaw one. But you can ask the rabbit”.
  • So the little boy went on farther still, until he came tothe rabbit. ”Please, Mr. Rabbit”, said the little boy. “Canyou help me? I’m looking for a little red house with achimney. It has a little door and when it’s opened up,there’s a little star inside”.“I don’t’ know”, said the rabbit. “I never saw one. But youcan ask the wind”.
  • So the little boy went on farther still. The wind wascoming down the hill as the little boy climbed up. As theymet, the wind turned about and went along, singing besidethe little boy. It whistled in his ear, and pushed him.“Please, wind”, said the little boy. “Can you help me? I’mlooking for a little red house with a chimney. It has alittle door and when it’s opened up, there’s a little starinside”.
  • The wind cannot speak in our words, but it went singingahead of the little boy until it came to an orchard. Thereit climbed up in the apple tree and shook the branches.When the little boy caught up, there at his feet lay agreat red apple.
  • The little boy picked up the apple. It was as much as histwo hands could hold. It was red as the sun, and the thickbrown stem stood up as straight as a chimney, and it hadno doors and no windows. Was there a star inside?
  • The little boy called to the wind, "Thank you," and thewind whistled back, "Youre welcome." Then the little boygave the apple to his mother. His mother took a knife andcut the apple through the center. Oh, how wonderful!There inside the apple, lay a star holding brown seeds.
