Becoming “El Draque” -Born in 1540 in Tavistock, Devon -Began sailing at the age of 12 -Captain of Judith at the age of 24 “ The people of quality dislike him for having risen so high from such a lowely family; the rest say he is the main cause of wars.” — Gonzalo González del Castillo in a letter to King Phillip II, 1592

The Precursor <ul><li>Battle of San Juan de Ulúa (1568) </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>The English, under the command of Sir John Hawkins, were defeated by the Spanish fleet </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Drake survived and his hostility towards the Spanish heightened </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Said to be part of the lead-up to the war between Phillip II and Queen Elizabeth I </li></ul></ul></ul></ul>

Early Successes <ul><li>Raided the town of Nombre de Dios </li></ul><ul><li>Captured a mule train with 20 tons of silver and gold </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Was so much gold that Drake had to bury it and return later </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>-Returned home rich and inspired, continuing on to more adventures </li></ul></ul>

  9. 9. War with Spain <ul><li>Began in 1585 </li></ul><ul><li>Drake started by attacking colonial cities in the West Indies and Florida, and ships laden with gold and other precious cargo </li></ul><ul><li>Destroyed 30 ships in the Spanish Armada off the port of Cadiz </li></ul>
  10. 10. Death and Burial <ul><li>After unsuccessful venture in the West Indies, died of dysentery 28 January 1596 </li></ul><ul><li>Died and was buried in his armor </li></ul>
