SACRAMENTALS SACRAMENTS  We have talked about SACRAMENTS: These are some of the 7 Sacraments:     Baptism, Confirmation, Confession, And receiving the Holy Communion, etc. SACRAMENTALS  But right now we are going to talk about SACRAMENTALS  In this lesson we will learn 2 things about SACRAMENTALS: 1) 2)  We know that Sacraments are visible sings that give us Grace, they were instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church 1 What is Sacramental? Some different types of Sacramentals
    2. 2. SACRAMENTAL VS. SACRAMENT  If you look the word SACRAMENTAL, you would notice that there is a smaller word in it.  SACRAMENT AL   THE SACRAMENT is an outward sing instituted by Christ to give Grace. THE SACRAMENT: is the most abundant source of Grace.  So What is the definition for SACRAMENTAL? SACRAMENTAL is an outward sing instituted by the Church to give you Grace.
    3. 3. SACRAMENTAL  SACRAMENTAL: outward sing instituted by the Church to give Grace.  “Instituted by the Church” means that the Church over time and through tradition, has allow these diferente devotions   and prayers and “things” “objects” to come about  And they allow Grace to come to anyone who participate or uses these things or Sacramentals.  Sacramental’s purpose is to put each Christian in closer Relationship with Christ
    4. 4. SACRAMENTALS  Remember An Outward Sing, is something that represents a thing other than it self  So SACRAMENTAL is an object or action that represents something outside of itself.  SACRAMENTALS give us Grace in a very unique and especial Way,  The Sacramental’s purpose is to put each Christian in closer Relationship with Christ.  But do not forget the SACRAMENTS  They give us Grace Over About any other prayer, religious objects,  or any other Devotion that we may have, or participate in the Church.   .   Remember Jesus become present in all the 7 Sacraments, by the Power of the Holy Spirit, we receive Grace through them But very specially in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist… because is Jesus Himself present body & blood, soul & divinity.
    5. 5. TYPE OF SACRAMENTALS  There are many Sacramentals, Now we will see some few examples, or type of Sacramentals: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Blessings Scapulas Oils Bells Incense Candles Holy Water Medals, etc.
    6. 6. TYPE OF SACRAMENTALS  Some Sacramentals are used in the ceremonies of the Sacraments: a) For example: Holy Water & Candles are sacramentals used in the Sacrament of Baptism. b) Oil Sacramental is used in the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick c) And much more…
    7. 7. 1) BLESSINGS  Blessings can occur for things, that are going to set aside:   for religious, or for God  We have 3 forms of Blessings: 1) 1st type of Blessings of Objects, & things in the Church, 2) The 2nd forms for Blessing would be for People: 3) The 3rd type of Blessing is for Exorcisms
    8. 8. 2) BLESSINGS The 1st type of Blessings:  Blessings of Objects, or things in the Church like     . Vestments, Vessels, candles, Statues, or pictures, etc.
    9. 9. 2) BLESSINGS 2. The 2nd forms for Blessing would be for People:   such as Consecrated religious is the highest forms of blessings, and it is the highest form of Sacramental in the Blessing category.   3. Blessings that Parents can give to Children Or Blessings of Abad or Readers at Mass The 3rd type of Blessing is Exorcisms,  which is the casting out off the devil of someone or something.
    10. 10. 2) SCAPULARS  2nd example of Sacramentals are the SCAPULARS;  In medieval times, or even in the time of Jesus:  Scapulars were like Aprons;  Escapulars will protect your clothing for under need getting duty.
    11. 11. 2) SCAPULARS  So if you were serving in a great Loyal castle, you will use the back of the panel to clean up your hands, if they got duty, And you walk backwards from whoever you are serving, so they never see your duty part of your scapular, or apron.
    12. 12. SCAPULARS FOR RELIGIOUS ORDERS  So for the friars or sisters of religious orders, like the Dominicans,  The SCAPULAR represents as being servants of our Lord and our Lady,  They put SCAPULARS on to show that they are ready to serve and work for our Lord or Our Lady.  Just like a servant would it done, during the time of Jesus or the Medieval times
    13. 13. SIMON STOCK AND THE SCAPULARA  Saint Simon Stock was a Carmelite Saint, who help to spread the devotion of the BROWN SCAPULAR  THE SCAPULAR was presented by Our Lady to St. Simon Stock, the Father General of the Carmelite Order, on July 16, 1251.  St. Simon was an English hermit and lived in the hollow of a tree.  He received the name "stock" because he lived in the hollowed trunk or stock of a tree.  Our lady actually gave him the Brown Scapular
    14. 14. THE BROWN SCAPULAR  This is the BROWN SCAPULAR Our lady said to St Simon Stock  that whoever dies wearing the Scapular should not suffered the Eternal fire.  When we wear the Scapular,  we show Our lady our love her,  We honor her by following his advise so we want to do whatever his son Jesus tells us (John 2:5) “His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." 
    15. 15. SCAPULAR in Different Colors and Sizes  Now, there are different colors and sizes of Scapulars:  Brown: is one of the Carmelites Scapulars  White: in honor of the Holy Trinity
    16. 16. SCAPULAR in Different Colors and Sizes  Different colors and sizes of Scapulars:  Blue: in honor of the Immaculate Conception  Red: in honor for the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.  And many much more…
    17. 17. 3) HOLY OILS  The 3rd example of Sacramental is Holy Oils  WE have 3 types of Oils 1. Chrism 2. Oil of the Sick 3. Oil of the Catechumens  Oil has ever been used in the Old Testament as a sign of special dedication to God.
    18. 18. 3) HOLY OILS  In the Old Testament we can find men, who were anointed with oil and Consecrate to God.  Samuel anointed king David and poured oil over his head  Since David was anointing king, that seal can not be taking away
    19. 19. HOLY OILS  So our too, in our Baptism Holy Oil is placed upon the crown of our head in the form of the cross  To show that we, or whoever is Baptized is now a child of God and heir of the kingdom of Heaven.  Also in our Confirmation, we are anointed with Oil, and our soul is Seal,  When you are anointed, the Holy Spirit filled your Soul with God’s Grace and Seal it  So that seal can not be remove, or take away.
    20. 20. HOLY OILS  The 3 main times the Holy Oil is used is at: 1) Baptism 2) “Anointing of the Sick” 3) And when some one is made Catholic ( with Oil of Catechumens)
    21. 21. 4) BELLS  There are 4 types of Bells  The Ave Bell  The Pealing Bell  The Tolling Bell  The Hand Bell  The 1st is the Ave Bell This Bell is rung during 3 times on the Day Usually    early in the morning Right at noon time An in the Evening
    22. 22. THE AVE BELL  The Ave Bell is ringing in a specific rhythmic way to announce the special prayer called the Angelus  There will be a set of 2 rings, 2rings, and so on  And then you know there will be time to stop or kneel, where ever you were, and you will listen and pray the Angelus
    23. 23. PEALING BELL  The 2nd form of bell is Pealing Bell  This bell is rung for celebration,  is a rang of ringing of very different and beautiful sounds and peaches, high and low.  And this is a rang to announce celebrations: like a big Wedding or huge feast  Such as Slavic Bells on Easter time in Poland: They ring on Easter time in random times during the day  All bells start to tall all, in different times just to show that Special day, that is!
    24. 24. TOLLING BELL  This is a slow solid, deep sounding Bell that announces the death  Or is rang in the Feast Of Poor Soul, to remains us to pray for those souls,  To remains us to pray for those souls that are suffering in Purgatory  Remember this Bell Rings very low and very slowly.
    25. 25. HAND BELL  HAND BELL: This one you probably hear or see in Church  These Bells are rang, to show the most important point of the Mass  Some times is rang to announce the beginning of Mass.
    26. 26. HAND BELL  Hand Bells are also rang at the time when the Priest is celebrating Mass,  and put his hands over the Vessels, Just before consecration,
    27. 27. HAND BELLS  Also these bells are rang, when Priest lifts up the HOST.  And when He lifts up the CHALICE, this bells are rang, too.  The most important parts of the Mass happen, when these hands bells rang
    28. 28. MORE EXAMPLES OF SACRAMENTALS  Insence  Candles  Medals  Holy Water
    29. 29. 5) INCENSE  The Following Sacramental is INCENSE  INCENSE is also call Frankincense:  It is a crystal type of substance that come from the desert trees o dry sap found in Saud Arabia.
    30. 30. 5) INCENSE What do you do with those Crystals?  You place them in a hot container burner  Immediately you get a sweet smelling smock
    31. 31. SOME CENCERS ARE DESING TO SWING  The little container, where the incense is held in, is called CENSER  It is design so that it can be swung  If you notice the Incense is rising upward:  It is a sing of our prayers offering to God.
    32. 32. SPECIAL DAYS IN MASS WE USE INCENSE  So if you recall there is a time in the Mass when we use incense. a) We used incense during the offering of he gifts b) We also used incense before the readings, c) when the Gospel reading is read.
    33. 33. INCENSE: Our Prayers Offering to God  It reveals our seal for God, so profound, so deep  that we burn up ourselves for God: Like a Sweet fragrance rising up to Heaven  In Scripture is said: “Let my Prayer be the incense before you, The raising of my hands like an Evening Oblation; Our lives are meant to be completely burned up, and offered to God, as a Sweet-Smelling Sacrifice…”
    34. 34. 6) CANDLES  We have many forms of Candles that we use in our different liturgies and sacraments  For example:  At Baptism we hold a small candle to show the light of Christ is within us.  The same is for the bride and the broom in the wedding celebration.
    35. 35. RED CANDLE  In the Sanctuary of the Church, next to the Tabernacle,  there is a RED or White Candle that burns there all time, to tells us or whoever enters to the Church  that Christ is Present on the Tabernacle.
    36. 36. TWO CANDLES  Also during Mass there always suppose to be 2 candles on the Altar burning  Reflecting once again  God’s life  and God’s love.
    37. 37. CANDLES  Also we use visualizes, where there is beautiful set of racks,  where there is hundred of little candles light up showing all people intentions  INTENTIONS that there are offering up to God through their little candles,
    38. 38. CANDLES AND VISUALIZER  By Lighting candles and giving them to our Lady and to Our Lord, we remember:   that Jesus is the light of the World That we love him and we are waiting for his 2nd coming.  That God’s Grace became to dwell in our soul the day of our Baptism, by the Power of the Holy Spirit.  And we still receiving his Grace in other Sacraments, Specially the Holy Eucharist.
    39. 39. 8) HOLY WATER  HOLY WATER is the more connected to our Baptism, along with HOLY OIL.  Holy water is symbol of interior and exterior Purity  Which is purity in our heart and purity in our actions   Exterior, being our outside actions. Interior, being in the heart.
    40. 40. HOLY WATER  In the Scripture it says: “ I will sprinkle clean water upon you in front your idols, I will cleans you, taking from your stony heart and give you a Natural heart…”  This means that Holy Water is blessed.  Many times, HOLY WATER is inside a little bouquet and is use to sprinkle  The Priest would walk and sprinkle it
    41. 41. HOLY WATER  Santa Teresa de Avila said:  That HOLY WATER put devil to flee, and prevent it to coming back again.  This is how powerful the HOLY WATER is because:     We remember our Baptism, the first time, when God came to dwells in our soul. He dwells in our Soul; we belong entirely to God His Grace (Divine Life) is in our Souls. And the Holy Water brings all those Truths toward our minds.  The Devil cannot even stand being near to Holy Water
    42. 42. HOLY WATER  Holy Water can also can helps us as a mean to grow.  When we use to make the sing of the Cross, we are telling Our Lord   to come and protects us and cleans us from venial sins.  The Church urges to use Holy Water, specially when danger is treating   The devil hates Holy Water, he doesn’t want to be near it. Holy Water can over power Him and send him away from you, as long we are in State of Grace (not committed mortal sin)  The devil can not long abide near someone who has been blessed with Holy water & Who knows that God dwells in the soul.
    43. 43. 7) MEDALS  Metals are use to honor the Saints, by following his examples.  Some who use the meal of St. Michael, they are showing that they honor him  wish to be under the protection of St. Michael  And they wish to follow his example of loving and serving God. 
    44. 44. MEDALS FOR A PILGRIM  During the Medieval times Medals were a souvenir of going in a pilgrimage.  So when we see the medal of Guadalupe,  It is a pilgrim, when going to visit the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe,  get a metal and wear it, to remain themselves that they have being there    And that Mary has a message for us: “To do What Jesus said” To remains us every moment that we must make Jesus present in the world , with words & deeds. And to elevate our minds, and hearts to God, each possible moment.
    45. 45. SACRAMENTASL TIED TO HEAVEN  How wonderful it is that we have the Sacramentals !!!  We can be tied to the Saints and God in Heaven through these metals, or other different Sacramentals.  But we have to be careful!! We SHOULD NOT used them as a goodluck charm…  Remember: Sacramental’s purpose is to put each Christian in closer Relationship with Christ & God’s Grace.
    46. 46. SACRAMENTAL TIED TO HEAVEN  There are many stories a tied to the Sacramentals, to show how wonderful it is, part take,  or to use them, because they can brings us closer to God.  Many believers have become closer to Jesus’ Mysteries & received wonderful graces after praying the Rosary.  In 1854 a family became Catholic, after a boy make the cross with a scapular, in the violent sea, and this calm down.
    47. 47. SACRAMENTAL TIED TO HEAVEN  According to various believers, one of the most efficacious, or Grace filled medal, it is the metal with a Picture of Our Lady with words around it: “Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who are recurs to thee”  The Miraculous Medal also known as the Medal of the Immaculate Conception,, the design was originated by St Catherine Labouré following her reported vision of the Blessed Virgin  it is believe that wearing the medal with faith and devotion can bring special graces through the intercession of Mary at the hour of death.  Such items of devotion are not charms and should not be construed as being so, but only serve as constant physical reminders of devotion and Mary's promise. One wearing the Miraculous Medal will, however, receive great graces.
