However, some vendors still use the 4 digit SIC number. NAICS: North American Industry Classification System (1/97-) Note: On 1/1/2003, the 6 digit NAICS code replaced the old SIC numbers. However, some vendors still use the 4 digit SIC number. MSA: Metropolitan Statistical Area (must have at least 50,000 people and a center of population. Williamsport is an MSA.) Company information: Information about 1 specific company Industry information: Information about many companies who produce similar products or services 10-K The annual report produced by publicly held companies and submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC.) 10-Q The quarterly report produced by publicly held companies and submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC.) 8-K A report about a special event, that is produced by publicly held companies and submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC.) This is a resource that contains a one page summary of company information for hundreds of companies. Each of the 1,700 companies is ranked by “Timeliness, Technical, Safety and Beta.” Financial data and an analysis of the company is included and revised every 13 weeks. The one page summary of company information follows the industry information. Big Charts Use the ticker symbol and compare a stock's performance to its industry. Daily closings are available. Comparison to the DJIA, S&P, Russell 5000 will also be found. The Forbes 400 This URL links to many lists produced by Forbes magazine. The information can be sorted by rank, name, sales, profits, assets, market value and employees. For example, lists for the “400 Best Big Companies,” the “Forbes 2000,” “200 Best Small Companies,” etc. can be found. Investors.com This is a Fee-based web site powered by Investor's Business Daily, a very reputable daily newspaper focusing on stock, investments and financial issues. ReferenceUSA Information is sorted by company name, type of business, NAICS Code, SIC #, geographic area, number of employees, & total sales. Ratios for an industry, not company, will be given. Definitions of ratios can be found at the beginning of the book. Following each ratio, an example of what the ratio means will be given. Zacks Investment Research Enter the ticker symbol in the "Quote" box. Press “Go.” Choose a tab: o "Quote" o “Estimates” o "Charts" o "Company Reports" o "News" o "Financials" Also look at the tabs located above the word “Zacks.” For example, look at “Broker Research-Industry Rank” or “Broker Research-Brokerage Reports.” Dow Jones Averages Includes information about the Dow Jones Averages only: the indexes, their composition, etc. TIAA-CREF Financial Services Use ticker symbol and compare a stock's performance to either the S&P, Dow Jones, NASDAQ averages for 1 day to 1 decade.   7. 7. Industry Information Note: Remember that you can create industry information by identifying all companies that produce a similar product or service (e.g., all toy companies.) Identify the information needed (the data cell, e.g., earnings per share) per company. Add all of the EPS figures for those companies. Divide that sum by the number of companies used to create the sum. This is your industry average. HG4501 .V26 Value Line Investment Survey (updated every 13 weeks). The industry information is created by analyzing information about many companies who produce similar products or services. A one page summary of company information follows the industry information. Big Charts Data for some industries will be given. Type the keyword of your industry in the box in the left column. Dow Jones Industry Index information will be found on the left, as well as the best/worst performing stocks within that industry. Current Industrial Reports Published by the U. S. Census Bureau. “The primary objective of the CIR program is to produce timely, accurate data on production and shipments of selected products. The data are used to satisfy economic policy needs and for market analysis, forecasting, and decision making in the private sector.” Reports are produced monthly, quarterly or annually.

We currently have about 15 print or E-books published by Plunkett’s. Examples include Plunkett's retail industry almanac, 2004 [electronic resource], Plunkett's automobile industry almanac, 2003 [electronic resource] and so on. Be careful of the dates. Industry Specific Trade Data Published by the Industry Trade Data and Analysis, Office of Trade and Industry Information. Select a broad manufacturing or services industry (e.g., “Consumer Goods.”) Select a subset of that group (e.g., 2009 Furniture and Related Products Report.) The report in pdf format will appear. Economic Indicators Go to STAT-USA/Internet Select "State of the Nation" (left side of your screen) Scroll half way down the page Find the heading "General Economic Indicators" o To: "Consumer Price Index" o or to "Economic Indicators Summary" o or to "Gross Domestic Product" o or to "Producer Price Index, etc." Find the heading "Economic Policy" o To "Summary of Commentary of Current Economic conditions (Beige Book)". o Select the relevant release date. Bureau of Economic Analysis "Measures, interprets, and presents GDP, personal income, corporate profits, etc." Bureau of Labor Statistics In the right column, the CPI, PPI, unemployment rates, job outlooks, etc. are given. The left column gives general subject headings with arrows to more specific data. For example, mousing over “Pay and Benefits” shows the subheading “Earnings by Industry.” FedStats A comprehensive site that provides statistics to over 100 US federal agencies. Budget of the United States Government The most recent budget of the federal government will be given. USA.gov An online index to the entire U. S. Government. Economic Report of the President. Mergent Online Contains information about +10,000 companies, including a 10 year history of a company, balance sheet information, industry ratios, list of properties owned, etc. ABI/Inform Research A Proquest business database with many full text magazine & journal articles. STAT-USA/Internet Contains statistics compiled by agencies and departments of the U. S. government. ReferenceUSA Information is sorted by company name, type of business, NAICS Code, SIC #, geographic area, number of employees, & total sales. BusIndustry (Business and Industry) A database that is not full text. Contains facts, figures and key events for international public and private companies, industries, products, and markets for manufacturing and service industries. Covers all the primary business information sources - from leading trade magazines, newsletters, and the general business press to international business dailies. Business and Management Practices A First Search database, not full text that contains citations to and summaries of business management articles. Proquest A database, general in scope that contains full text articles. Campus Research (Westlaw) A database containing legal information. Top of Page
