  • 1. General Pollutants, Your Breathing In Filth-Brought to you by EliteCleanEnergy Carbon monoxide (CO) The main source of this air pollutant are automobile exhausts. Carbon monoxide distorts vision, impairs reflexes and reduces the amount of oxygen that reaches body tissues. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) The main source of this pollutant are burning of fossil fuels in power plants and automobiles. Nitrogen dioxide causes acid rain which is know to harm animals, the environment, and damage statues or structures made of marble or limestone. Nitrogen dioxide also damages the respiratory system as it known to irritates lungs and lowers its subjects respiratory defenses. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) The main source of this pollutant are volcanoes, burning of fossil fuels in power plants, oil refineries, and paper mills. Sulfur dioxide leads to acid rain and lowers defense of the respiratory system. Lead (Pb) The main source of this pollutant are battery plants and smelters. Lead damages the nervous and digestive system. Ozone (O3) Ozone (O3) is a natural process that occurs most during the strong presence of the sun. In a more scientific explanation, strong ozone is produced when reactions of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons are in sunlight. Ozone reduces lung function and causes inflammation. (makes it hard to breath) Quick Facts: Amount of Gases in the Air Nitrogen:78.08% Oxygen: 20.95% Argon: 0.934% Carbon dioxide: 0.036% I’m sure you have noticed all the harm that comes from factories and the burning of fossil fuels. This is the reason that the need of alternative power and energy is so important. We must do our best to go green and influence society to change the means in which power is produced.
