If your objectives are not meaningfulto you, one of two things will happen:
You won’t get them done.
You’ll get them done, but you’ll be miserable in the process.

Identify your vision of success for the year
Write down the story of your success for this coming year –a short paragraph. Be sure to include this sentence – be specific:
The main difference between my business now and what it will look like at the end of the year is. . .
Reading through your narrative, pull out the major, meaningful objectives you see there by finishing this next sentence:
In order to achieve this, I must. . .

Set meaningful objectives
Review your success vision along side your mission statement in your business plan.
Does your success vision for the year support and advance your mission?
If not, which needs to be refined?
Consult last year’s business plan:
Are any of the objectives noted in your success vision holdovers from last year?
Which objectives from last year were achieved? Take these clues from prior successes to help you assess potential objectives for this year.

Develop effective strategies

In context of your newly added and/or re-committed success vision, set the primary strategies in each of the four key areas of your business to achieve each objective:
Business Operations
Financials
Client Services & Marketing
Growth & Development
Prioritize your objectives vis a vis your success vision. This will make decision making as to where to invest your resources easy.

Increasing revenue was identified as an objective in our sample success vision. It’s a perennial favorite, so let’s use that as an example.

Vision of success, meaningful objectives, primary strategies
Refining your success vision, identifying meaningful objectives and primary strategies are all an excellent places to get some external feedback.
Have a brainstorming session with your ‘Board of Advisors’ – meet with your mentor or business coach. Make a complete mess of your whiteboard, just get that list of potential objectives and strategies up there.
Run a SCOT Analysis to bring the best strategies to the forefront, discard those that don’t make sense, and force you to address the Challenges you will have to overcome to achieve your objectives.

Achieving clear success
So now you have your success vision, meaningful objectives, and primary strategies - but how will you know when you’ve achieved them? You need to identify the actions, success metrics and goals that will enable you to measure and verify your success.
List the necessary actions needed to implement the primary strategy identified.
Your success metrics are what you use to measure your success.
Use goals to specify the targets your success metrics need to hit to show that your objective has been achieved.

Achieving clear success - ACTIONS
The actions to be listed in this process are the high level steps needed to implement your primary strategies.
Don’t break these actions down to their smallest parts  that task is for your detailed action. Instead, your goal right now is to define the basic blueprint to achieving success for this year.
You will find that the same actions can often support multiple success metrics – these are your goldmines!

Achieving clear success
Once you identify the success metrics you will use to measure your success, you will verify your success through SMART goals:
S  make the goal Specific
M  it is connected to a Metric
A  it is Attainable: stretch yourself, but stay realistic
R  the goal is Relevant, advancing your objective
T  set a firm Timeframe by which to achieve
Using this process to develop your goals, they will necessarily be Relevant to your objective and connected to a Metric
So make sure they are Specific, Attainable and Timeframed

Be clear about your mission and your values for the year. What IS your vision of success for the year?
Use your values and mission statement to guide you as you identify your meaningful objectives.
Brainstorm with trusted support to identify the objectives and primary strategies needed to realize your vision of success.
Define – with specificity – the actions you will take to implement your strategies and how you will measure and verify your success – these are your actions, success metrics and SMART goals.

final notes
At the end of this process, you will have your blueprint for this year’s success.
It will serve as a touchstone for you over the year so you always know exactly why you are taking the steps you are taking – you always have your endgame in mind.
Use It!! Don’t go through this process if you’re going to bury this blueprint under a stack of papers. Keep it in front of you – take 2 minutes each day to review it and reconnect with this year’s purpose. Are the actions you’re taking today moving you closer to your vision of success?
