  • Hi everyone! This is a DCPS data overview presentation to help us focus on our strengths and improve our weaknesses as a team. My name is Elimar Saldana and I served in DCPS as a substitute teacher. My experience in DCPS has been a changing process. Lets begin with our facts.
  • Hi everyone! This is a DCPS data overview presentation to help us focus on our strengths and improve our weaknesses as a team. My name is Elimar Saldana and I served in DCPS as a substitute teacher. My experience in DCPS has been a changing process for good and excellence.
  • There are 86 public schools in DC and a total of 46,517 students in 2010-2011 from ages 4 to 18 approximately.
  • The black population in DC is the hightes but from 2010 to 2011 we saw a significantly decrease on this population and a significantly increase on the white population. The Hispanic, ELL, and Special needs population stayed the same. Is vey important to clarify that more that the half of our entire population receive the advantages of the free lunch under the NCLB law.
  • As in most of the States, DC gives standardized test every year. In DC, we give the DC CAS- DC Comprehensive Assessment System to students in grades 3 to 8 and 10 in the month of April.
  • As we see in the slide, Students in grades 4, 7 and 10 also take a composition test. Students in grades 5 and 8 also take the science test. Students in grades 9-12 who take biology take the biology test.
  • Here we can see some results from year 2008 to 2011. Almost half of our entire DCPS students population scored proficient or advance on the DC CAS in Elementary School but we have been seen a decrease in both Math and Reading. In Secondary Education around 40% of our population were proficient or advanced and we have been seen a increase of around 5% in both Math and Reading.
  • These is a very important clarification. DC is a urban district with a very atypical population distribution that may not represent or compare to the population distribution in the education system in other states.
  • This are the result for Reading and Math in the NAEP in both 4 and 8 th grade. Here we see around a 20% of proficiency or above.
  • The needs in both 4 th graders and 8 th grades is in those Below Basic. Even though it have been decreasing, we still have over 50% below. We need to keep on growing the Advanced and Proficient percentage in Reading and Math both.
  • The average of Daily attendance is good but the average of Graduation Rate needs to keep on growing, it can be higher. Teachers, we can find more ways to help those students that attend class to stay in class and finish their work, so they can accomplish their of graduation. Thank you.

NATIONAL ASSESSMENT OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRESS• This table shows how students are doing according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), a different test that is taken nationally and allows us to compare students in DC with students in each state. One thing to remember in comparing DC to other states, is that we are not a state but rather an urban district, so comparisons to states may be misleading.
