  • 1. BACKBITING
  • 2. Definition• The Prophet (PBUH) defined backbiting when he said: "Do you know what is meant by backbiting?" Theysaid, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "To saysomething about your brother which he dislikes." Oneasked, "Even if what I say is true about my brother?" Hereplied, "If such defects you say are true about him, thenyou have backbitten him, and if he doesnt have what yousay, then you have committed slander against him."(Related by Muslim, Abu Dawood, and Tirmidhi)
  • 3. Social Effects• When we look to the faults of others. The respect we have for them in our hearts disappears and love towards them is extinguished. therefore it is prohibited. Everyone has so many faults if we are looking towards and spreading them all would become enemies.
  • 4. Ways to Backbiting:• By tongue.• Eyes, hands, and other movements.• By writing.
  • 5. According to Quran• "And spy not, neither backbite against one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah. Verily Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful." (49:12)• "Woe to every slanderer and back-biter!" (Surah Al- Humazah, (104: 1)
  • 6. According to Hadith• " Backbiting is a worse sin than adultery."• It is further explained in a saying of the Prophet (SAS), narrated by Abu Saeed and Jubair in Bayhaqi: "Allah may forgive a person if he/she repents after committing adultery. However, Allah will not forgive the one who backbites, till his/her victim forgives him/her.“• The Prophet (SAS) during his Me’raj journey saw some people who had nails made of red copper. They were tearing apart their faces and chests with these nails. The Noble Prophet asked the Angel Jibrail (AS) about them, He said, “They are being punished because they used to eat people’s flesh in their lives, i.e. used to backbite and defame others.• Abu Hurayra (RA) narrates that the Noble Prophet (SAS) said, “The killing of a Muslim by another unjustly, usurping others’ wealth or defaming other Muslims is totally forbidden (or Haram).” (Sahih Muslim)
  • 7. Ways to Resist Backbiting• Guarding the tongue: It is well known that whoeverguards his tongue make fewer mistakes.Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever gives me surety to safeguard what isbetween jaws and what is between legs, I guaranteed for himparadise.”
  • 8. • The Virtue of opposing backbiting: The person who listens to backbitingis also a sinner unless he oppose with his tongue or byheart. It is right of a Muslim to speak up and opposebackbiting made against his Muslim brothers. Todefend against backbiting is not something minor.Prophet (PBUH) said: “ Who ever defends the honor of his brotherin his absence, will be entitled to ALLAH’s protectionfrom fire.”
