Strengths <ul><li>Ireland is a nation of gamers! </li></ul><ul><li>We have the 2 nd highest number of Playstations per capita in the world </li></ul><ul><li>Notable success in games middleware, plus some good start-ups </li></ul><ul><li>We have one of the highest penetration rates of mobile phones and active game portals with each of the mobile operators. </li></ul><ul><li>In the last 6 years, 8 new computer game courses have been setup. </li></ul><ul><li>There are a large number of FPS (first person shooter) clans and organised LAN gaming communities. </li></ul><ul><li>One of the reasons major game publishers (Vivendi, Activision & Microsoft) locate their localisation centres here, is due to our large active gaming population…and yeah, the tax rate.. </li></ul><ul><li>Yet, where is the local development industry </li></ul>
  3. 3. Weaknesses <ul><li>Hmmm.. This could take a while </li></ul><ul><li>No tradition / experience in game development (producing in particular) </li></ul><ul><li>No publishers </li></ul><ul><li>Not a priority industry </li></ul><ul><li>Investors here like technology over content </li></ul><ul><li>And…….. So you want to make a film promo/shot, you go to the Film Board. So you want to make a game prototype, you go….. </li></ul>

Opportunities <ul><li>Casual Games / Web 2.0 </li></ul><ul><li>Deliberate move by the traditional games industry to expand the market </li></ul><ul><li>Games for the mass market: older game players, female game players, non-technical game players </li></ul><ul><li>New technologies allows games to be deployed on consumer devices such as PDAs, interactive TV and mobile phones </li></ul><ul><li>Games types for newer devices; Word/puzzles, sports, licensed games (film/pop), location based </li></ul><ul><li>Xbox Live, Wii, Guitar Hero…. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Threats <ul><li>We all end up working for Google </li></ul><ul><li>We all up working for the government </li></ul><ul><li>All our potential game developers emigrate. </li></ul><ul><li>We loose interest in gaming…. I don’t think so! </li></ul>

Making Casual Games <ul><li>Much of the same skills needed for PC / console games </li></ul><ul><li>Software: Java,Flash, though other languages always preferable </li></ul><ul><li>Art: same tools such as Photoshop, 3D Max. More focus on 2D, plus drawing skills vital!!! </li></ul><ul><li>Level Design: Experience of PC, console, online & mobile games, plus other media </li></ul><ul><li>Qualifications count….. </li></ul>
