I used 2 distinct methods to integrate the Map APIs with Cognos. Which you choose depends on the amount of data, how often the data is refreshed and the amount of interactivity the user will need.

The first method is to simply create a list report that contains all the data you need to create the map and with any filters you want. Then add an HTML item to hold the map and an HTML item to hold the JavaScript. The key here is that the JavaScript will traverse the html table that makes up the list report, and extract the data it needs to send to the Map API. This method works well for small sets of data and allows you to use the built in Cognos prompts for filtering.

The second method is to simply schedule a report to run on a regular basis and output the results to the file system either as a CSV or XML. Then use JavaScript to loop through or parse the file and pass the data to the Map API. You can filter the resulting dataset through JavaScript. This method works well for data that is refreshed on a regular basis i.e. Daily or Weekly. One of the screenshots that used method 2 was based on this example http://mapsapi.googlepages.com/categories.htm by Esa Ilmari.

    Hello Ed Gonzalez,

May I ask some questions about your presentation? Because, I would like to integrate google maps within Cognos Reports. I have the following questions:

    1) Did you use the Cognos SDK, or did you use javascript or something else?
    2) Was it also possible to add a table to the report and integrate it with a map in combination with Google Maps?
    3) To show the Cognos table did you do that within a html-item or did you just add a insertable object from the Cognos Menu?
    4) How did you commicate between Google Maps and Cognos? Did you use XML, did you use a Cognos Webservice (I don’t know if that is possible or exists). Because for now I don’t know how I can transfer data from Cognos to Google Maps.

I hope you are willing to answer the questions.

    Thanks in advance.

    Greetings, Hans van Zon
