Ecosystem & food chains
1. ECOSYSTEM
All animals and plants found in one place,
and the way they all live together is
referred to as ecosystem .
Different plants and animals live in
different ecosystems.
Different ecosystems can be close
together.
There are some animals which belong to
several ecosystems.
2. ENVIRONMENT
Everything that affects an animal makes up
its environment - where it lives, the
weather and all the living things it comes
into contact with.
Every living thing, including human being, has
an effect upon the environment.
3. ADAPTATION
For survival it is important that all living
things are suited to their environment.
Fish have streamlined bodies, fins and
specially shaped tails to help them
move quickly and easily through the
water.
Squirrels have sharp, strong claws for
gripping tree trunks and branches and
strong teeth for eating nuts.
4. HABITATS
The dwelling place of an animal
It is obvious that an animal would like
to live where it can find food, water,
shelter and a mate. All these are
important for survival
5. LIVING THINGS
Food is the basic requirement to live.
In an ecosystem living things depend on
each other for their food.
6. CARNIVORES
These are the animals which
like to eat only other
animals. They are called
‘carnivores’.
10. WHO IS AT TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN.
The strongest which is not hunted by other animals are
at the top of the food chain
No other animal hunts the tiger.
The tiger is at the top of the food
chain.
12. ENDANGERED OR EXTINCT?
Human population is rapidly increasing. As a result other animals
are facing danger of being hunted. Some are left few in number.
These are the endangered animals.
In the future if they completely die out, they become extinct.
