  • 2. The Assignment:
    • Choose two networks from the list at Educational Networking that would be of use to you in your current position. Discuss why and how you would use these and what the impact would be on your professional practice.
  • 3. Network #1: Classroom 2.0
    • Classroom 2.0 describes itself as a “social network for those interested in Web 2.0 and collaborative technologies in education”. Currently there are over 36,700 members (Hargadon, 2010).
    • Classroom 2.0 is built on the Ning platform, which is a free online service that allows people with common interests to network together through tools like discussion boards, blogs, chat rooms, and posting of videos and photos (Ning, 2010).
  • 4. Why Classroom 2.0?
    • Throughout their book Web 2.0: New Tools, New Schools , Solomon and Schrum (2007) make the case that schools today need to embrace and implement Web 2.0 technologies in order to engage today’s digital students. As an instructional technology specialist, one of my responsibilities is to educate teachers on the use of the latest technologies including Web 2.0. I work at the district level and do not get to interact with teachers and classrooms on a daily basis. The Classroom 2.0 network will allow me to see into the classrooms of educators already using Web 2.0 technologies and glean best practices to pass on to teachers in my district.
  • 5. How Will I Use Classroom 2.0?
    • On the Classroom 2.0 site, I can monitor, participate in, and even initiate discussion board threads on topics I am interested in knowing more about. For example, in visiting the site this evening I saw a thread on iPods in the classroom which is very timely for me since I have been given a charge to find out how we can begin using iPods and podcasting with our administrators. I need background information, and gleaning from the experiences of others posted here will be a tremendous help since this will be a new technology to our district and I do not have an “in-house” resource to consult.
  • 6. Classroom 2.0’s Impact on My Professional Practice
    • Classroom 2.0 will give me instant access to a network of professional educators who have already begun implementing technologies that my district has yet to try. Through reading the posts and asking questions of the teachers and teacher-leaders on Classroom 2.0, I will add to my knowledge and lean on their experiences to help me make informed recommendations to my district as to how we should proceed with implementing “new-to-us” technologies. I also hope Classroom 2.0 will expose me to innovative technology uses I am currently unaware of and allow me to bring fresh technology integration ideas to our schools.
  • 7. Network #2: Diigo Educators
    • Diigo is a social bookmarking website which allows individuals to save links to useful sites on the web, and then tag the links so others can benefit from the resources they have found. Diigo includes capabilities for networking with other professionals who research similar topics on the Internet. Persons who find useful sites can also annotate them so their network members can see their exact thoughts on the resources (Diigo, Inc., 2010).
    • Diigo Educators is a group of teachers on the Diigo site who have networked with one another so they can more easily share useful education-related links (Davis, 2010).
  • 8. Why Diigo Educators?
    • Pitler, Hubbell, Kuhn, and Malenoski (2007) encourage the use of social bookmarking sites as well as other collaborative tools for teacher and student cooperative learning in their book Using Technology with Classroom Instruction that Works . I decided to investigate the 1300 member strong Diigo Educators network because I have successfully used a similar site, Delicious , for several years. Delicious, however, does not have website annotation capabilities (Yahoo!, n.d.), and I believe Diigo’s ability to annotate as well as tag might bring a new layer of depth to my use of social bookmarking tools.
  • 9. How Will I Use Diigo Educators?
    • I will use Diigo Educators to research educational technology topics for reasons including personal interest and school district initiatives. Using our administrative iPods project as an example again, I can go to the Diigo Educators network and search on the tag “iPod” to find Internet resources which fellow educators have already discovered and deemed to be of enough quality that they were bookmarked for future reference.
    • I will also “give back” to the network by saving and tagging quality resources I find by other means.
  • 10. Diigo Educators’ Impact on My Professional Practice
    • When I use Diigo Educators as one of my reference tools, I will be searching through a large but limited number of links tagged by professional educators such as myself. Because these web resources will have been sifted through human “search engines” before coming up on my screen, I anticipate finding quality results in a much less time than if I were doing the same research using a general search engine such as Google. Using Diigo Educators properly should lead to more informed educational practice and recommendations on my part.
  • 11. Summing it All Up
    • I look forward to exploring the resources available to me on Classroom 2.0 and Diigo Educators. I believe by gleaning from fellow professionals, I will grow in knowledge of best practices in educational technology. I also hope to contribute back to these professional networks and in turn impact the professional growth and development of fellow educators across the Internet.
