co2ntdown: Dutch action to reduce CO2 emissions

Published on

This presentation informs on a new emissions reductions project inspired by Ecofys that has been launched in the Netherlands in October 2013. The CO2ntdown initiative aims at reducing the Netherlands’ emissions by an extra 10% which would equal 20 million tons of carbon emissions. CO2ntdown is the first action on national level of the overall global approach ‘Wedging the Gap’ that Ecofys initiated.

co2ntdown: Dutch action to reduce CO2 emissions

  1. 1. proudly presents:
  2. 2. Climate Change: much talk but little action 2 GtCO2e But… • We are heading towards 58 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2020 • No binding international agreements • The longer we wait the larger the gap • If we start to act before 2020 we could bridge this gap – worldwide: 14 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions • In The Netherlands we would have to bridge: 20 million tonnes of CO2 emissions (~ 10% additional emission reductions by Dutch actors) 14 GtCO2e International leaders agree: • 2°C global warming limit is a guiding principle • Maximum 44 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions in 2020
  3. 3. Climate change: big risks “The inundation of coastal cities; increasing risks for food production potentially leading to higher malnutrition rates; many dry regions becoming dryer, wet regions wetter; unprecedented heat waves in many regions, especially in the tropics; substantially exacerbated water scarcity in many regions; increased frequency of highintensity tropical cyclones; and irreversible loss of biodiversity, including coral reef systems” ~ World Bank, 2012 ~ “Climate change is by far the greatest economic challenge of this century. And we should make no mistake: without concerted actions, the next generation will be roasted, toasted, fried and grilled. And it is upon us to avoid that”. ~ Christine Lagarde, managing director IMF, 2013 ~ 3
  4. 4. Our response in The Netherlands: • Co2ntdown connects a group of leading organizations that together reduce CO2 emissions by 20 million tonnes between now and 2020 • Co2ntdown offers a perspective with 10 feasible goals • Co2ntdown measures results and makes contributions concrete and visible 4 October 16th 2013
  5. 5. Co2ntdown: 10 concrete goals Million tonnes of CO2 10 large Dutch companies reduce CO2 emissions by 10% 1000 companies are certified under the ‘CO2 performance ladder’ 2,4 1/3 of energy use in offices is fully energy efficiënt 3,1 10 large municipalities reduce CO2 emissions by 20% 3,0 There are 500.000 electric vehicles on the road -or equivalent- 0,6 500.000 homes gained an energy neutral status 2,4 All households possess extremely energy-efficient devices 2,0 There are 17 million solar panels 2,4 2 million clean cookstoves in underdeveloped countries 3,0 100 companies voluntarily reduce CO2 emissions externally 5 2,0 2,0 October 16th 2013 20 Million tonnes of CO2 (taking overlap between goals into account)
  6. 6. We count down from 20 to 0 million excess tonnes of Dutch CO2 emissions in 2020 6 October 16th 2013
  7. 7. Co2ntdown: why participate • Being socially responsible: partners are recognized for choosing to be part of the solution to reducing climate change. No ‘greenwashing’ accusations. Partners commit themselves to actions with impact. • Benefit from clear perspectives and synergies: Co2ntdown offers concrete options to reach climate goals. Moreover it should be easier to reach these goals as Co2ntdown creates synergies between partners (e.g. make use of each others services and products). • Monitoring: Co2ntdown offers an independent high quality monitoring service that registers progress and tracks significant contributions. • Visibility: Co2ntdown will regularly publish information on results. • Partnerships: Co2ntdown offers a platform for organizations to join forces with other like-minded first movers. Gives profit: image, competitiveness, sales, security of supply, motivation of employees, employment, a green living environment, food and water security 7 October 16th 2013
