Czech TV Archives Overview
approx. 235,000 hours of AV records
approx. 1 , 200 hours are classified as the most valuable
TV archives – Prague, Brno and Ostrava
3 sections ( news archive , general archive , film library )

AV content storage
AV records are stored on:
videotapes (type C videotapes, betacams SP, digital betacams, U-matics)
film (35,16 mm, colour and b/w, positives and negatives)

Preconditions for digitization
2002 – birth of concrete idea
2007 - passed a n important media law
legislative preconditions for the process
law allowed funding of the process
difficult position of public broadcaster compared to private sector

Digitization expenses
technological structure - approx. 350 million CZK (approx. 14 million €)
another necessary equipment s and the conversion - 600-700 million CZK ( approx. 25 million €)
total cost is estimated at 1 billion CZK (approx. 40 million €)

no direct support from the government budget

February 2009 - end of the phase of implementation and customization
Since 1/1/2010 news production has been digitised with the following priority :
n ew production to archive
latest records
most vulnerable records from the years 1980-1991
i mportant, rare and frequent records

Critical aspects of the DAPF ( Viz rt Ardome )
lack of flexibility
problems with compatibility within the current system environment (Provys)
more production than archive system
difficult switch to another possible system solution

Current status
11 000 hours of 4 levels of content has been already digitised
import to DAPF through :
DNPS (Digital News Production System)
DART (Digital Automated Recording Tool)
digitization of tapes

Near future outlook
October 2011 – start of digitizing of the retrospective news archives
end of year 2011 – start of digitizing of the general Czech TV Archive s

More distant future outlook (2012 – 2015)
DAPF - full support and part of the production environment
HD technology
