Data integration case study: Automotive industry

  1. 1. Data integrationAn automotive industrycase studywww.etlsolutions.com
  2. 2. Introduction The ability to cost-efficiently combine data from diverse dealer management systems made the dream of network integration a reality for Honda.• Our Automotive consultants use our bespoke software to integrate data from the varied systems used by Honda‟s dealers.• Read on to find out how we have streamlined communications across the Honda network.
  3. 3. The challenge• Honda UK Manufacturing wanted to improve communications with its dealer network, but this posed several challenges.• The key challenge was that many of their 200 dealers use different types of Dealer Management System (DMS), preventing easy and quick communication and information sharing. Many of the DMS have different designs, coding standards, business rules and variable options for data export, with a big margin for error.• The dealer network just didn‟t communicate with Honda directly or easily; Honda had wrestled with this problem for almost ten years and something had to be done.
  4. 4. The solution• Honda selected ETL Solutions for two projects: 1. Service Invoice and Used Car Sales project: to DataHub data carry out an after sales „Insight‟ Customer movement software Satisfaction survey and generate Service Reminders for all UK dealers. 2. Automatic Parts Replenishment: to transfer data from dealers to Honda‟s Automated Planning System (APS) in Brussels. The aim was to compare current stock levels at dealers with sales history and then automatically reorder parts to meet projected demand. Consultancy services• Both projects use our DataHub software. Data is transferred from dealers to ETL Solutions‟ dedicated Honda server at our offices in Bangor, North Wales, where it is verified, and consolidated with data received from Honda.• The results are sent to Honda for analysis and to generate next service date reminders.

  6. 6. Software architecture principles• Allows many transforms (e.g. servicerepairs, new cars, used cars, parts, bookings) to be scheduled and run independently • Failures of one extract from a dealer doesn‟t necessarily affect others• Allows generic transforms with parameters in database• Provides logging of results • For all types of DMS • Better reporting and analysis of results• Hosted off-site failover system

  11. 11. Data transmissions
  12. 12. Dual redundant failover• Live server performs daily tasks• Back-up server, continuously updated is ready to take-over if the live system fails• Operational report server where reports are run• Live, back-up, and operational servers can be hosted off-site independent of development and test systems at our HQ
  13. 13. The result• The projects have revolutionised the way Honda works with dealers in a number of “Honda has been seeking to ways: achieve Dealer Network • Better communication, relationship and Integration for the last ten years. service to dealers With the help of ETL Solutions, • Supply chain efficiencies this has finally been achieved. Considering the success, Honda • Integration of dealers is now far quicker is now planning to extend this • Improved customer satisfaction approach to the European• Today, our consultants continue to dealers.” integrate data for Honda, providing Michael Doyle, Honda UK seamless support services via DataHub.
  14. 14. DataHub in DetailAutomatic data collection to a central datawarehouse using a variety of internet protocols.Easily configured to accept new dealers andDMS changesFully Robust, Scalable, Secure
  15. 15. DataHub features• Complete automated processing of data• Hosting service for data being transferred • Maintains details of dealers‟ DMS configuration• Allows many channels scheduled to run independently, e.g. • RepairsServices • NewUsed Cars • CustomerVehicles • Parts stock and demands • Bookings• Failures of one dealer channel doesn‟t affect others• Encryption of all data transferred• Consolidated data sent to manufacturer or third party
  16. 16. Simple install and monitoring• Remote install of extract software at dealerships - Automatically updates extract software whenever required• Automatic monitoring of extracts and notification if transfers fail - Recover data for periods when systems are not available• Automatic operational reports generated and sent to distribution• Displays operational performance
