  2. 2. Militarism Germany was competing with the UK tobuild battleships. The British feared an attack on theirempire. Germany was competing with Russia andFrance to expand their army.
  3. 3. Alliances By 1914 the countries of Europe with more power wereseparated into two alliances. The Triple Entente (Britain, France and Russia). The Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary andItaly).
  4. 4. Imperialism All the great powers were fighting for colonies/territory. The British were feared of Germany in Africa. The Austrians were feared of Russia and Serbia in theBalkans.
  5. 5. Nationalism This was an age when all nations wanted to show theirpower and independence. The slav of Europe, aided by Serbia and Russia wantedto be free of Austrian rule.
  6. 6. SignificantIndividualsKaiser Wilhelm II He built up German army and navy. Aggressive foreign policy. Determined to make Germany a top nation. Distrusted by other powers.
  7. 7. The Crisis 1 It was on June 28 1914. Franz Ferdinand visits Sarajevo. The capital of Bosnia was recently grabbed by Austria. Hotbed of Slav nationalism.
  8. 8. The Crisis 2 The terrorist attack Franz Ferdinand. Bomb attempt fails in the morning. Gavrilo Princip kills Franz Ferdinand and his wife inthe afternoon. Austrians blame Serbia for supporting terrorists.
  9. 9. Why did Britain getinvolved? Britain had ententes with France and Russia. She felt threatened by the growing power of Germany. She felt confident with the Schlieffen Plan.
  10. 10. Schlieffen Plan Was the plan of Germany to defeat France and Russia. Avoid french defences by invasion of Belgium. Germans thought Britain would no intervene.
