    • AVEIROReasons to visit our townPORTUGAL“Salinas”The oldest activity of Aveiro, is the production of Salt. Take a stroll to the“Salinas” right outside the city. You will encounter small "mountains" ofsalt.Known as the Venice of Portugal, Aveiro is surrounded by salt-flats, beaches and lagoons and dominated by the Central Canal that crossesthe town. There are several ways to discover Aveiro: on board of a typical “moliceiro” boat along the Ria waters, by BUGA (Aveiro free bikes)or simply on foot through the paths of Art Nouveau or of Contemporary Architecture.Of all the boats seen in the area, “Moliceiro” is the most elegant, beingperfectly lined, painted with bright colours and often with ingenious andhumorous decorations.“Moliceiros”The Art Nouveau Museum, located in Casa MajorPessoa, a true icon of art nouveau.New Art MuseumWhen arriving in Aveiro by train, visitors are usually drawn to thetrain stations tile-adorned façade. From there it is about 1km (justover half a mile) to the Central Canal, walking down the mainavenue, Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho.Railway StationThe Church of Saint Dominic, now “Sé Catedral de Aveiro”, wasfounded in 1423 and was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries. Itfeatures examples of several religious architectural styles, namelymannerist (side chapels), baroque (high choir, vaults and cross) andmodernist (transept and master chapel).“Sé Catedral”Located in the city centre, it is abeautiful building – it once was animportant factory. It is theold Convent of Jesus.The University of Aveiro (UA) – High School founded in 1973 –soon became a reference due its research quality, the teachingstaff and its modren facilities.University of Aveiro
