Second year of a three year annual piece of research into the student experience – looking at full-time undergraduates. Quotas including year of study, institution type and gender to ensure the results were representative of the student population.
The Strategic Response to the Wave of Change document – Surfing the Wave – highlights the importance of being evidence-led and understanding the needs of students better. There are many sources of information including the National Student Survey, International Student Barometer, Postgraduate Taught and Research Experience Surveys. I have been asked to present on the NUS/HSBC Student Experience Report. As you will know the NUS has received funding from HSBC to undertake research into the experiences of undergraduate students, and the depth of the research allows us to explore in more detail some of the top-line findings from the NSS. This presentation is particularly going to focus on Teaching and Leaning Report which came out in November as well as giving you a preview of some of the findings from the Student debt report coming out later this week and also the internationalisation and religion report coming out next month.
Now touching on some of the key stats from the upcoming mini-report on Teaching and Learning. Surprisingly the per centage of students that rate the quality of their teaching and learning as good or excellent has slightly increased since last year, perhaps the discussions in the media has encouraged students to think more positively about their own experiences. Interestingly in the context of the new HEFCE funded student engagement project in England and HEFCW funded WISE project in Wales the per centagae of students wanting to be further involved in shaping their course has increased.
Looking at this in a bit more detail it brings up some interesting stats about how they want to be involved with 18% wanting to be course reps – which is significantly higher than the number of places available. 31% wanting to be involved in setting their assessment criteria and almost three-quarters wanting to provide feedback on course design
One of the prevailing political discourses at moment is surrounding the question of whether students are receiving value for money and whether the additional income coming from variable fees has resulted in a significant improvement in the student experience. The Surfing the Wave document suggests a set of minimum standards and key entitlements of their educational experience, specifically in securing access to tutors, student feedback, facilities and other key areas of expectation. Students are overall relatively satisfied with the level of contact hours that they receive – with 75% saying that their contact is adequate. However there is also a significant variance by subject areas that has some correlation to the number of hours that they are studying.
Ie top two subjects for contact hours have highest satisfaction with their contact and the four lowest by hours have the lowest satisfaction. But five subjects have 13 hours contact and there is a range of satisfaction from 68% to 78%.
Interestingly 90% of students would want feedback on their exams.
Only 1% of students didn’t use any ICT as part of their studies Virtual Learning Environments had been used by 71% of students, with lecturer uploaded content the most popular, and students suggesting that this helped them to deepen their understanding of their subject. Less than 50% of students used online forums on at least a weekly basis, whereas the internet was used as a source of information by 95% of students
Just under one third of students, 32%, said they belonged to a religion, with the majority, 65%, saying they did not belong to a religion. While only 15% of religious students said that they felt excluded from social activities which focus on drinking, this was significantly higher among students who belonged to a religion other than Christianity – 11% of Christian students said they felt excluded from social activities which focus on drinking compared to 28% among other religions. There is a similar difference when looking at the proportion of religious students who say that there are clashes between their academic timetable and religious and holy days. Only 5% of Christian students said that this occurred compared to 41% among other religious groups.
Increasingly diverse student body with therefore increasingly diverse wants and needs In 1998 after the initial introduction of fees and then again in 2006 students became more demanding – what will be the implications of future changes? One thing that we have seen increasingly is that students aren’t simply prepared to fill the hole in public expenditure – they will expect a better experience if they are expected to pay more

Methodology
- The quantitative phase consisted of an online questionnaire, which ran between 2nd and the 24th of June 2009.
- 1187 students took part in the survey
- The qualitative phase consisted of an online bulletin board of 12 domestic students, designed to compliment the quantitative phase by providing an arena for discussing a range of issues.
