Constructed Response Example In the reading, An old world religion in a new world it isstated that “religion permeated all of life” (Line 5), whichaccurately describes colonial Latin America. During the Spanishcolonization there was “no distinction between religion andpolitics or religion and economics” (Line 6). The governmentofficials ruled based on the teachings of the bible and collectedtaxes from the people for the church to gain power. The Spanishfurther went on to convert the local Native American tribes toRoman Catholicism ending their own native religions. TheseSpaniards were clergy and soldiers (Line 32) whom “becameincensed when the inhabitants of the land could not perceive thesuperiority of Christianity,” (Line 34) thus forcing conversion withviolence when they believed it necessary. It is because of religionsrole in politics, economy and war that it did “permeate all of life”in colonial Latin America. CPDD K-12 Literacy Social Studies
