SUN, 6 JAN EPIPHANY DAY Following a special Mass at the Cathedral of each town, a religious procession takes place down to the sea, at around 10:30 hrs, leading to a ceremonial baptism of the Holy Cross into the sea. During the ceremony, the Bishop throws the Holy Cross into the sea and young men dive into the water to retrieve the cross and return it to the Bishop. Science Environment - Culture” The exhibition presents the genesis and the emergence of the island of Cyprus. With the use of photographs, diagrams, minerals, fossils, artefacts etc., the visitor learns about the geological processes which gave birth to an island with unique geology, topographic features microclimatological conditions and fertile soil covered with thick forest and a great variety of flora and fauna and with abundant water and mineral resources as well as hydrocarbons. All these elements together with its geographical position at the crossroads between three continents formed the basis for an excellent habitat for people and of a ten thousand years long history of art and civilization. The exhibition is not only for geoscientists but also for many other scientists such as historians, archaeologists, agronomists, mining and civil engineers, hydrologists, doctors for the evolution of medicine and pharmacology in Cyprus, teachers and professors for teaching purposes as well as for everyone who wants to know Cyprus. This is part of a series of initiatives to revitalize the avenue and its surrounding streets and attract more visitors to the area. During this period the avenue will host 18 miniature wooden houses with hot beverages, food and sweets, Christmas ornaments, children’s activities as well as music performances and many more. The collection of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia in a dialogue with the artworks of Kyriaki Costa and Louiza Kaimakli” The exhibition presents the illustrations created by artists Kyriaki Costa and Louzia Kaimakli following the chronological order related to the course of the History of Nicosia and the History of Cyprus in general. The visitor can re-experience the Museum’s collections and at the same time observe the contemporary artistic creation. By introducing the pieces onto the space of the permanent collection a dialogue is generated between the Museum’s artefacts and objects, illustrating and reflecting historical events, historical moments, historical figures and many more. This discreet visual art intervention enables the viewer to re-live and re-examine the Museum collections through contemporary artistic creation. GERMASOGEIA WALKS Every Wednesday (in English) October to April. Each walk will be organised on every alternate week. 1. Germasogeia - A Village Blessed by Water This tour aims to take visitors to the peaceful, picturesque village of Germasogeia 15 minutes away from the beach, to stroll through its narrow streets, see its special architecture, visit its churches, and feel the village life. Water has always been the most important element in the development of Germasogeia. It is bounded by the sea in the south and on its north it has as a physical boundary, the water dam of Germasogeia fed by the river Amathos coming from the mountains of Troodos. The tour also includes a visit to the water dam of Germasogeia. 2. Discover the Natural Environment of Germasogeia This tour aims to discover the nature of Germasogeia. The idea is to walk away from the village to the serene surroundings of the area and enjoy a relaxing stroll wandering the hills of Germasogeia. The participants of the tour will enjoy a ride in the old Bedford bus, which drives partly through an earthen road. They will walk (there is some up hill walking) for more than half an hour along the nature trail of the area off Phinicaria laid out by the Forestry Department and enjoy the magnificent view of the water dam and river. In the winter colourful flowers and shrubs cover the valley. The herbs and wild flowers and tree blossoms give a variety of colours and scents. The aim of this walk is to explore the area and visit the Handicraft Workshops created by young ceramic artist most of who are inspired by ancient Cypriot art. The Walk goes through picturesque streets of the Turkish sector of Larnaka, where visitors have the chance to see traditional white washed houses, houses with kiosks and the present use of this residential area. The walking tour Strolling around Pafos Town Centre (Ktima) aims to provide an overall picture of Pafos and how Pafos Town Centre evolved and developed from the late Byzantine and Medieval times to what as it was called until recently Κtima. The Pafos Town Centre (Ktima) is associated with the local everyday life of the population. For the Pafians though, Pafos Town Centre (Ktima) has so much more to it…. Through historic references, linked with some very important historic phases including Medieval, Ottoman, British and modern times; one will ‘walk’ into the past but will also get better acquainted with the commercial centre of Pafos. Agia Napa and the Sea: A Different Dimension This “walk” interprets the historic connection of the area of Agia Napa with the sea and the recent development of the village. The participants are driven to Cape Greco to walk up to the top of the “tigani” (flat bottomed frying pan) where they will have the chance to learn about the archaeology of the area, its connection with the sea, and get to know its natural beauties. Then they will be driven to Ayii Anargiri, a chapel in the northern part of Cape Greco. After a coffee break, the “walk” continues along the coast to the archaeological site of Makronisos.
