Transcript of "Current and future plans for ELIXIR presentation given by Niklas Blomberg, ELIXIR Director at ELIXIR Launch event, 18th December 2013"

  1. 1. Current and future plans for ELIXIR Niklas Blomberg, ELIXIR Director 18 December 2013 European Life Sciences Infrastructure for Biological Information www.elixir-europe.org
  2. 2. ELIXIR’s mission To build a sustainable European infrastructure for biological information, supporting life science research and its translation to: medicine environment bioindustries society 2
  3. 3. The Challenge in Life Sciences • • • • • • 3 Data Standards Tools Compute Training Industry
  4. 4. The Challenge in Life Sciences • • • • • • 4 Data Standards Tools Compute Training Industry
  5. 5. A distributed infrastructure to scale with the challenge ELIXIR data infrastructure for Europe’s life science research sector ELIXIR Nodes build local bioinformatics capacity throughout Europe ELIXIR Nodes build on national strengths and priorities 5
  6. 6. ELIXIR Status MoU signed: ECA signed: Announcing today: Belgium 6
  7. 7. New building for ELIXIR Hub now open 7
  8. 8. ELIXIR Pilot: Identifying new drug targets Interoperability of high-resolution protein data at EMBL-EBI and HPA, Sweden The Human Protein Atlas portal is a publicly available database with millions of high-resolution images showing the spatial distribution of proteins in 46 different normal human tissues and 20 different cancer types, as well as 47 different human cell lines. http://www.proteinatlas.org 8
  9. 9. Acceleration towards sustained operations • Key objectives: • In 2014: Build on success of Interim Phase, formal establishment of Nodes • In 2015: Start delivering ELIXIR services, sustain BioMedBridges services • From 2016 onwards: sustained operations across ELIXIR 9
  10. 10. Industry and Innovation • Challenge to access and understand services • EU wide engagement programme - Build on strong local interactions through Nodes! • Small companies – Big Data • ELIXIR Cloud for SMEs • EFPIA and IMI 10
  11. 11. ELIXIR Programme 11
  12. 12. A Life-science infrastructure of interoperable and integrated data-services Will the improvement we see in an LPS-challenged mouse translate to a measurable clinical benefit? Data interoperability, vocabulary and ontology services Europe PMC EGA Expression Atlas HPA Gene Ontology UniProt user data 12
  13. 13. BioMedBridges Ten new biomedical sciences research infrastructures stronger through common links • Computational ‘data and service’ bridges between the BMS RIs • Interoperability between data and services in the biological, medical, translational and clinical domains • Link basic biological research data with clinical research and associated data 13
  14. 14. Future challenges for life-science data services Distributed infrastructure with >1M users Scale and Sustain funding Algorithms to data – clouds, research environments… 14
