  • 2. We celebrate this festival with following thoughts
    • Spirit of Sacrifice
    • Uswah (example) of Ibrahim (A.S.)
    • Hajj
    • Relevance of sacrifice and Ibrahim (A.S) example to our time
  • 3. Surah Al Hajj 21:34-37
  • 4. What is Qurbani or Adhiya
    • 1-It is commanded by Allah (SWT)
    • 2- It brings us closer to Allah (SWT)
    • 3- It teaches us to give up something for higher purpose, i.e., pleasure of Allah.
    • 4- It also teaches us to share with others who are less fortunate.
    • 59:9
  • 5. Sacrifice in other religions before Muslims
    • Bani Israel: Torah describes that Prophet Jacob and Moses (AS) sacrificed. Prophet Solomon is reported to have sacrificed. Prophet Abraham’s sacrifice is also mentioned.
    • Christianity : Mathew 5: 23 talks about sacrifice
  • 6. Ahadith on Sacrifice
    • Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 15 :: Hadith 71
    • Narrated Al-Bara':
    • I heard the Prophet (p.b.u.h) delivering a Khutba saying, "The first thing to be done on this day (first day of 'Id ul Adha) is to pray; and after returning from the prayer we slaughter our sacrifices (in the name of Allah) and whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunna (traditions)."
  • 7. Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 15 :: Hadith 98
    • Narrated Ibn 'Omar:
    • The Prophet (p.b.u.h) used to Nahr or slaughter sacrifices at the Musalla (on 'Id-ul-Adha).
  • 8. Sacrifice (Kitab Al-Dahaya) Dawud :: Book 15 : Hadith 2782
    • Narrated Mikhnaf ibn Sulaym:
    • We were staying with the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) at Arafat; he said: O people, every family must offer a sacrifice and an atirah. Do you know what the atirah is? It is what you call the Rajab sacrifice.
  • 9. Sacrifice (Kitab Al-Dahaya) Dawud :: Book 15 : Hadith 2784
    • Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib:
    • Hanash said: I saw Ali sacrificing two rams; so I asked him: What is this? He replied. The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) enjoined upon me to sacrifice on his behalf, so that is what I am doing.
  • 10. Sacrifice (Kitab Al-Dahaya) Dawud :: Book 15 : Hadith 2789
    • Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah:
    • The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) sacrificed two horned rams which were white with black markings and had been castrated. When he made them face the qiblah, he said:
    • I have turned my face towards Him. Who created the heavens and the earth, following Abraham's religion, the true in faith, and I am not one of the polytheists.
    • My prayer, and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of the Universe, Who has no partner. That is what I was commanded to do, and I am one of the Muslims.
    • O Allah it comes from Thee and is given to Thee from Muhammad and his people. In the name of Allah, and Allah is Most Great. He then made sacrifice.
  • 11. Distribution of meat
    • 1/3 for the family
    • 1/3 for the friends and neighbors
    • 1/3 for the needy
  • 12. Goal of sacrifice is to achieve pleasure of Allah with sincerity
    • In pre Islamic Arabia, people used to put meat and blood of animals in front of kaaba and rub its blood on its walls.
  • 13. Uswah (example) of Ibrahim (A.S.)
    • As Saaffaat 37:99-106
  • 14. Hajj-Commanded in Quran
    • 022.027 وَأَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ يَأْتُوكَ رِجَالا وَعَلَى كُلِّ ضَامِرٍ يَأْتِينَ مِنْ كُلِّ فَجٍّ عَمِيقٍ
    • "And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men: they will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel, lean on account of journeys through deep and distant mountain highways;
    • 022.028 لِيَشْهَدُوا مَنَافِعَ لَهُمْ وَيَذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ فِي أَيَّامٍ مَعْلُومَاتٍ عَلَى مَا رَزَقَهُمْ مِنْ بَهِيمَةِ الأنْعَامِ فَكُلُوا مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا الْبَائِسَ الْفَقِيرَ
    • "That they may witness the benefits (provided) for them, and celebrate the name of Allah, through the Days appointed, over the cattle which He has provided for them (for sacrifice): then eat ye thereof and feed the distressed ones in want.
    • 022.029 ثُمَّ لْيَقْضُوا تَفَثَهُمْ وَلْيُوفُوا نُذُورَهُمْ وَلْيَطَّوَّفُوا بِالْبَيْتِ الْعَتِيقِ
    • "Then let them complete the rites prescribed for them, perform their vows, and (again) circumambulate the Ancient House."
  • 15. Hajj- The 5 th Pillar and Spiritual Journey
    • M uslims trace the recorded origins of the divinely prescribed pilgrimage to the Prophet Abraham, or Ibrahim
    • It was Abraham who, together with Ishmael (Isma'il), built the Ka'bah, "the House of God," the focal point toward which Muslims turn in their worship five times each day.
    • It was Abraham, too - known as Khalil Allah, "the friend of God" - who established the rituals of the hajj.
  • 16. Significance of Hajj
    • The Prophet, as ordained by God, continued the Abrahamic hajj after restoring its rituals to their original purity.
    • The hajj to Makkah is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation upon male and female adults whose health and means permit it
    • T he Prophet is reported to have asked God to pardon the sins of pilgrims who "stood" at 'Arafat, and was granted his wish.
  • 17.
  • 18.
  • 19. Relevance of these teachings to our time
    • O ye who believe! bow down, prostrate yourselves, and adore your Lord; and do good; that ye may prosper.
    • And strive in His cause as ye ought to strive, (with sincerity and under discipline). He has chosen you, and has imposed no difficulties on you in religion; it is the cult of your father Abraham. It is He Who has named you Muslims, both before and in this (Revelation); that the Messenger may be a witness for you, and ye be witnesses for mankind! So establish regular Prayer, give regular Charity, and hold fast to Allah! He is your Protector - the Best to protect and the Best to help!
  • 20. Allah (SWT) has chosen this Ummah for Prophetic Mission
    • As individuals, follow the path of Salaah, Ibadah, do good.
    • As an Ummah, to follow the path of Ibrahim (A.S) and be witnesses to the truth of Islam to the mankind as the Prophet Mohammad (SAW) witnessed the truth to the Ummah.
  • 21. This mission can’t be fulfilled without sacrifice
    • Sacrifice means: to let go things we love or value.
    • Things of value could be
    • A- Material like time, money, physical abilities, life
    • B-Immaterial like likes dislikes, love of family, prejudices, opinions, comforts, position.
  • 22. Sacrifice of Material things; Time
    • We should be ready to sacrifice things for which we invest time
    • We should be ready to give time for our mission whenever called.
    • We practice sacrifice of time 5 times a day when called for Salaah.
    • Time is continuously slipping from us and its value depends upon how we spend it. Why not make it valuable by spending for Allah (SWT)
  • 23. Sacrifice of Material possessions
    • Fair in the eyes of men is the love of things they covet: Women and sons; Heaped-up hoards of gold and silver; horses branded (for blood and excellence); and (wealth of) cattle and well-tilled land. Such are the possessions of this world's life; but in nearness to Allah is the best of the goals (To return to).
  • 24. Important considerations for material possessions
    • Love of material things is neither condemnable nor evil.
    • We ought not to make material things as purpose of our life
    • Material things are a means to earn our rewards in the hereafter.
  • 25. Reminders which make sacrifice of material things easy
    • 1-Everything belongs to Allah
    • To Allah belongeth all that is in the heavens and on earth.
    • 2-Everything shall be taken away from us at time of death.
    • What is with you must vanish: what is with Allah will enduring.
    • 3-Only by giving in the way of Allah (SWT) we will be returned back several folds
    • And whatever good ye send forth for your souls ye shall find it in Allah's Presence,- yea, better and greater, in Reward and seek ye the Grace of Allah: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
  • 26. “ O ALLAH send blessings and peace upon Muhammad. O ALLAH I ask YOU for YOUR bounty.”
