I heard the Prophet (p.b.u.h) delivering a Khutba saying, "The first thing to be done on this day (first day of 'Id ul Adha) is to pray; and after returning from the prayer we slaughter our sacrifices (in the name of Allah) and whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunna (traditions)."
We were staying with the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) at Arafat; he said: O people, every family must offer a sacrifice and an atirah. Do you know what the atirah is? It is what you call the Rajab sacrifice.
"That they may witness the benefits (provided) for them, and celebrate the name of Allah, through the Days appointed, over the cattle which He has provided for them (for sacrifice): then eat ye thereof and feed the distressed ones in want.
And strive in His cause as ye ought to strive, (with sincerity and under discipline). He has chosen you, and has imposed no difficulties on you in religion; it is the cult of your father Abraham. It is He Who has named you Muslims, both before and in this (Revelation); that the Messenger may be a witness for you, and ye be witnesses for mankind! So establish regular Prayer, give regular Charity, and hold fast to Allah! He is your Protector - the Best to protect and the Best to help!
Allah (SWT) has chosen this Ummah for Prophetic Mission
As individuals, follow the path of Salaah, Ibadah, do good.
As an Ummah, to follow the path of Ibrahim (A.S) and be witnesses to the truth of Islam to the mankind as the Prophet Mohammad (SAW) witnessed the truth to the Ummah.
This mission can’t be fulfilled without sacrifice
Sacrifice means: to let go things we love or value.
Things of value could be
A- Material like time, money, physical abilities, life
B-Immaterial like likes dislikes, love of family, prejudices, opinions, comforts, position.
Fair in the eyes of men is the love of things they covet: Women and sons; Heaped-up hoards of gold and silver; horses branded (for blood and excellence); and (wealth of) cattle and well-tilled land. Such are the possessions of this world's life; but in nearness to Allah is the best of the goals (To return to).
Important considerations for material possessions
Love of material things is neither condemnable nor evil.
We ought not to make material things as purpose of our life
Material things are a means to earn our rewards in the hereafter.
Reminders which make sacrifice of material things easy
