GSO PROJECT
When and Why Orphanage Was Created: The Good Shepherd Orphanage was created in
February 2014. Precisely, on the 11th
of May 2013, while shopping in the market, I found a
street child being badly battered by an angry mob for stealing a loaf of bread from a seller’s
stand. I took pity and approached the crowd. Upon enquiry, I realised that child was a street
child who had neither food, a home nor educational base. More over, through our
investigations we later learnt that his late parents were victims of HIV/AIDS. The founders of
the Good Shepherd Orphanage are Mme Ngono Marie Josée, Mme Mbong Anne Marcelle,
Dr. Takang Burnley and the Nkoabang Community
Orphanage’s Mission: The Good Shepherd Orphanage’s mission is
-To rehabilitate the underprivileged, orphaned and vulnerable children by providing them with
accommodation, healthcare and family warmth for economic and social independence.
-Prividing them with a complete diet for a good wellbeing
-Providing them with vocational education and later releasing them back into the society as
independent,responsible,healthy and adjusted adults
Orphanage’s Activities: Our major activities include; sensitization and identification of
vulnerable and underprivileged children, identification of then talents, visiting and discussing
with parents or guardians if any, absorption of these underprivileged and vulnerable children
into the orphanage, vocational training and/or otherwise for economic and social
empowerment, sensitization and education of the community dwellers on the dangers of
HIV/AIDS.
Specific Problems Addressed:
- The increasing number of street and abandoned children’s vulnerability
- Ignorance and denial of the existence of HIV/AIDS and assistance to victims
- Social and economic exclusion of the less previllaged in our community
- Juvenile deliquency
Accomplishments of the Orphanage: Some of our past program accomplishments are: we
have succeeded in identifying and absorbing into the orphanage some forty vulnerable,
orphaned and underprivileged children in the Nkoabang community. The oldest is 17 years

and the youngest is 9 months. Education and sensitization through workshops on the dangers
of HIV/AIDS and other STDS in the Nkoabang community. In these communities in the past
the villagers still adhered to their traditional beliefs that no such illness like HIV/AIDS exist
in Africa. They held very firmly that it was a Whiteman’s affair. But today, they belief and
are taking precautions. They have become more and more aware and careful as far as sexual
activities are concerned. Again, another of the accomplishments of our past program
accomplishment is that, we have succeeded in reducing juvenile delinquency in these
communities from 68% to 28% by the identification and absorption of underprivileged,
orphaned and vulnerable children into the orphanage.
Project Description: Our project envisages the construction of modern children’s village.
Presently we are operating at a very small site built of locally made mud bricks without
ceiling nor doors. The floor and the walls are uncemented. The few mattresses are thrown on
the uncemented floor for the children to sleep. Again, at present the children defecate in the
nearby bushes. No good toilet systems exist. Continuous defecation in the nearby bushes
might cause an epidemic at the long run. There is no pipe borne water system for now. Water
for washing and drinking is carried from a nearby running stream. We lack beds to throw
these few mattresses on. We are in need of beds for these children. Given the expanding
potentials of the orphanage, there is therefore need for a bigger accommodation. For now
there is also the problem of congestion. Furthermore, we are also faced with the problem of
securing the education and vocation training of these children at least for some time by means
of being sure to buy their school needs and pay their school fees constantly. However, of the
forty children absorbed so far, thirty seven of them are schooling and require school needs
and fees. More so, the increasing number of street and orphaned children and their
vulnerability is another of the problems that this project will address. Ignorance and total
denial of the existence of HIV/AIDS and the expulsion from family homes by family
members of HIV/AIDS patients makes up the list of numerous problems this project will
stand to address. Again, juvenile delinquency too is another, just to name a few. This project
will really stand to address all these aforementioned problems. The approach we are using in
this project to solve some of these problems is the bottom-top approach. This involves
physical contact with the Nkoabang community dwellers.
Description of the Population and their Needs: The total population of the Nkouabang
community is estimated at about 6,300 people. Of this, women and children make up 78%.
60% of the population earns a living through petty trading while 40% depend on subsistence
farming. Of the school – going age, up to 32% of the children are not schooling for obvious

reasons. As at moment, forty children will be served and their age range is between 9 months
to 17 years. That is, the youngest (was picked up from a public dustbin) is 9 months old and
the oldest is 17.
Benefits of the project to the Rural Population(project outcome): Some of the benefits to
be derived from the success of this project is that , orphaned, underprivileged and street
children in these communities would be able to receive a comfortable home and a safe,
healthy environment. Another gain which will be derived from this project is that, these
children will be able to receive a healthy diet, vocational education which will make them to
become socially and economically independent and responsible individuals in the society.
Furthermore, the gains that would be derived from the success of this project is that they will
be able to enjoy a modern toilet system. Thus they will be exempted from any future epidemic
break out. They will also gain access to portable water. They will also enjoy the luxury of
sleeping on a bed(a thing they have never experienced), rather than on an uncemented floor
Project Evaluation: The project evaluation would therefore be that of positivity. It would be a
very positive aspect in the lives of the orphaned, underprivileged and vulnerable children in
this community. The outcome evaluation of this project putting all above mentioned facts
together, is that of a long term as the modern structure and the pipe borne water would last for
some reasonable years to serve these children in their turns.
Sustainability: The only aspect of sustainability of this project is to pay the water and
electricity bills that would be levied. These two bills are only a token here. Our plans for
sustaining this project in the future if realised is simple. We own cassava, cocoyams and
plantain semi-plantations where these children are being fed from ever since we started. These
are staple food stuffs in our country. They are consumed everyday. Thus there is a very, very
high demand for them especially in the cities example Yaounde. The produce are being sold
to wholesalers generating cash for the future sustainability of this project. Added to all these
is our two main funding sources which are the Nkoabang Catholic Mission Parish and the
Nkoabang community who have been giving us financial, material and moral aids since the
creation of the orphanage.
