World Cancer Day: A Healthy
Lifestyle is your BEST Defence
against Cancer
Article Written by Dr Nkem Ezeilo (aka Dr Kem) from doctorkem.com
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide today.
It accounted for >8.2 million deaths in 2012, according to the World Health
Organisation.
It’s believed that over 95% of cancers are caused by ‘environmental’ factors, and
less than 5% are caused by things like genetics.
Whenever you see the word ‘environmental’ in a discussion to do with the cause of
disease, think ‘stuff that’s under my control’.
Today (February 4) is World Cancer Day, a day created to encourage awareness of
Prevention, Detection and Treatment of Cancer. It’s a day whose primary goal is to
reduce the amount of sickness and death caused by cancer, by 2020 (Wikipedia).
The primary focus of The Healthy Lifestyle Clinic is of course,
PREVENTION.
If we can prevent cancer, there’d be nothing to detect or treat. So I continue to study
the subject of Lifestyle Interventions known to prevent initial cancer or its
recurrence, and to improve your quality of life while going through this dreadful
disease.
This topic of cancer is very close to my heart because, not only have I lost close family
members to it, but I was diagnosed with breast cancer myself back when I was in my
thirties. Thankfully the treatment cleared it all up and it’s never coming back as long
as I maintain Healthy Lifestyle habits.
In today’s article I am going to share with you 10 strategies you can apply from
TODAY, in order to give yourself the best possible chance to beat this thing if you’ve
been diagnosed with it, and to prevent it if you have a family history.
Optimise your mindset.
- Refuse sympathy
- Refuse stress: overcome it by employing any number of stress overcoming
strategies as shared elsewhere on this blog.
- Believe you can beat this thing. Believe that your body is beating it. You have a
choice of what to do with the diagnosis you are given. Why not choose to believe you
will beat it? You’ve got nothing to lose by believing this. Whatever course of
treatment you choose to go through, believe you’ll pull through it and won’t have a
recurrence (Because of your healthy lifestyle game plan).
- Be thankful. This may sound crazy and you may be thinking ‘what’s there to be
thankful for when I’ve just received this devastating diagnosis’. Remember, I also
speak from experience. I choose to believe that there’s good in everything, whether I
see the good or not. So when I got that diagnosis, I chose to be thankful for the good
in it, though it wasn’t obvious to me at the time. But I was confident that there was
good in it so I remained thankful such that now it’s very clear to me what the good in
that experience was.
- It’s like this. When you receive a diagnosis of cancer, you have a choice how to
respond or react to it. You could choose to respond in fear and lose hope and all that.
OR You could rise to the challenge, and choose to respond in faith, hope and
ACTION. It’s a no brainer. I chose faith, hope and ACTION. I hope you do too.
Optimise your nutrition and oral health.
- Animal protein has been shown to speed up the growth of cancer, especially if it
makes up more than 10% of your meal. Studies
showed that animal protein of less than 5% of your
meal, didn’t cause the cancer cells to grow. So if
you’ve been diagnosed, minimise all animal protein
and protein sources. With a diagnosis as devastating
as cancer, I’d even go so far as to suggest you quit
eating animals especially red meat, if you wish to
help your body recover. If you have a family history
of especially breast, prostate, colon cancer, you’d do
well to ditch the animals altogether.
Based on a well conducted study detailed in the
book The China Study (by Prof T. Colin Campbel), a
British GP decided to do his own informal ‘study’ -
he got all his cancer patients to ditch animal food and go on whole food, plant based
foods, and followed them through the years.
He found that in nearly 100% of the cases, the cancer stopped growing and in many
cases, disappeared/shrunk, when the patient changed to a Plant-based nutritional
plan. Some unfortunate patients when they
noticed they were getting better, decided to
slack off and return to eating animal
proteins… and their cancer came back.
This fascinating study is documented in the
easy to read and entertaining book by Dr
John Kelly titled ‘Stop Feeding Your Cancer’.
- Plant based protein has no such effect on
cancer, according to studies. So eat plant
based foods, and remember to supplement
with vitamin b12 while you do so.
- Avoid processed carbohydrates and sugars. Otto Warbug, nobel laureate,
hypothesized that cancer cells generate energy by breaking down sugar non-
oxidatively (fermentation) rather than breaking down pyruvate (which is what
healthy cells break down oxidatively, for energy). This is where the whole ‘cancer
feeds on sugar’ line of thought originated. Whether or not the studies confirm this
(though the concept of cancer cells getting energy by fermentation is generally
accepted), the fact remains that processed sugar is bad for you, and if you have been
diagnosed with cancer, you want to nourish your body, not poison it.
- So eat plants, especially green ones, as they are loaded with vitamins, minerals and
antioxidants which help your body combat disease. They also provide you with your
protein and healthy fat needs (hemp seed is a good example of a plant that contains
both healthy protein and healthy fat, for instance). Think whole, not processed,
plants, not animals, raw more than cooked. Some foods are more beneficial when
cooked (eg tomatoes) - so a 100% raw food diet may not be optimal for your health.
- Another benefit of eating plants is that they are often alkaline, and cancer thrives in
an acidic environment, as Dr Warburg also pointed out.
- Eat lots of Fibre (plant-based nutrition ensures this anyway). Flax seed is a
particularly good source because of some other chemicals it contains. I’ll be writing
another article focusing on just nutritional strategies to overcome cancer, in future so
do keep an eye out or sign up for the FREE book on this site to be first to know when
the article is up.
- Take a high quality, bioavailable, pharmaceutical grade multivitamin, multimineral,
antioxidant supplement. Literally this is simply to ‘supplement’ your healthy
nutritional plan because with today’s farming practices it’s not likely you are getting
all the nutrients you need from your diet. And let’s face it - how often do you actually
eat 9-a-day portions of vegetables and fruit, each and every single day? Be honest
now. So you see, you need to supplement your regular nutrition with high quality
supplements.
- Poor dental health (think ‘plaque’ of ‘bleeding gums when you brush your teeth’)
has been linked with increased cancer death, according to one Swedish study. So pay
attention to your teeth: get regular dentist or dental hygienist check ups, brush and
floss daily and see a dentist anytime your gums bleed while brushing.
Optimise your hydration
A dehydrated body is unable to fight anything or get rid of waste effectively. You need
water to drive the processes taking place in your body. So, in order to give your body
the best chance against disease, drink enough water for your body size as worked out
by this formula:
Body Weight (Kg) x 33 ml = Your
(personal) Daily Water Requirement. This
formula was arrived at by the late Dr
Batmanjelid, a physician who devoted the
last 20 years of his life researching the
health benefits of water and the various
ways your body complains of dehydration.
Optimise your physical activity
Regular exercise has been shown to not
only help prevent recurrence of breast
cancer, but in general for those receiving treatment for cancer, it aids recovery (and
mental wellbeing, of course).
‘Regular Exercise’ here refers to at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise 5
days a week. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t work out this often. Start small. Baby
steps rule. Read my article on the 12 Week Jumpstart To Exercise plan, to give you an
idea how to get started from couch to gym (note you don’t need a gym in order to
work out effectively).
Optimise your elimination
Remember, this is about optimising your body and giving you the best chance to beat
cancer or prevent it.
Your elimination organs include:
- Skin (work up a sweat each day)
- Lungs (optimise your breathing: diaphgramatic breathing works wonders in more
ways than one)
- Kidneys (drink your body’s needed amount of water, exercise regularly to increase
blood flow to your kidneys and other organs)
- Lymphatics (exercise, massage, dry skin brushing - are great ways to keep your
lymphatics draining optimally)
- Bowel (a healthy nutritional plan with more plants than animal, optimal hydration,
regular exercise will ensure your bowel stays healthy and regular)
- Liver (your liver is more than just a ‘detox’ organ. It is a vital organ that performs
many functions crucial to life, and in fact January was ‘Love Your Liver Month’ - look
out on this blog for tips on how to love your liver).
Needless to say if you happen to need chemotherapy or
radiotherapy then all your organs of elimination and
detox must be working in top form otherwise you will
accumulate poisons in your body, which is not
conducive to your healing.
Optimise your Sleep
Melatonin, released by your pineal gland only in the
dark, apparently has some anti-tumor activity: some
studies showed that people with low levels of melatonin
developed breast, colon cancer more than those with
normal levels.
So, do your best to sleep at night, in pitch dark. If you work night shifts and can’t do
anything about it, try to simulate dark when you get home, by using black-out blinds
to darken your bedroom, switching off every device or gadget that has a light.
Read the series of articles I’ve written on sleep for more on this.
Optimise your Sunshine (vitamin D)
This humble hormone vitamin only recently started gaining the recognition it
deserves. As was described in the American
Journal of Public Health as far back as 2006,
“vitamin D deficiency may account for several
thousand premature deaths from colon,12
breast,13,14 ovarian,15 and prostate16 cancer
annually.17 This discovery creates a new impetus
for ensuring adequate vitamin D intake in order to
reduce the risk of cancer.”
It’s easy to find out your vitamin D levels - get your
doctor to arrange for you to have some blood tests
measuring your 25 (OH) Vitamin D.
Read this article to discover what normal levels should be and how you can optimise
your vitamin D.
Optimise your Gut Health
Even with the healthiest diet in the world, if your gut is unhealthy, you can’t properly
absorb what you do eat. So you want to optimise your gut health in order to increase
your chances of beating cancer.
- Eat fibre (plants contain fibre, so eat lots of green leafy vegetables each day, among
other things). Fibre also feeds your ‘friendly bacteria’ and helps them thrive, which
boosts your immunity.
- Exercise regularly - this increases blood flow to your gut, helping it function better.
- Drink lots of water- otherwise you’ll get constipated, especially if you’re eating a lot
of fibre. It’ll turn into a brick in your large bowel unless you’re drinking enough water
too.
- Avoid processed sugar, which irritates your bowel lining and encourages the growth
of harmful bacteria and fungus in your body.
- Take probiotic supplements anytime you take a course of antibiotics as antibiotics
kill off your friendly bacteria (probiotics), thus leaving you weaker than before.
Optimise your oxygenation
Cancer generates its energy best in an area devoid of oxygen.
So to beat the sucker, make sure you’ve got lots of oxygen in your system by:
-- Regular Exercise
-- Deep breathing exercises several times each day
-- Having a good belly laugh each day
-- Stop smoking!!!! You’re killing not just yourself but those around you, with this
disgusting dangerous habit. Seek help. Or find a good enough reason to stop. Many
doctors surgeries provide Smoking Cessation services. Many smokers stopped
smoking when their reason for stopping became bigger than their desire for nicotine.
For some it was the experience of their first heart attack, for some it was the
realisation that passive smoking was killing their children same as them. Whatever it
takes, stop smoking!
Optimise your social health
A cancer diagnosis can be devastating not just for the patient but also for friends and
relatives. If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, surround yourself with people who
are positive and hopeful.
Refuse sympathy for it is not an emotion that’s conducive for your healing. Last thing
you need is people feeling sorry for you.
Surround yourself with people who have a fighting attitude as in ‘you can beat this,
we know you can’.
Don’t go through life alone. Cultivate a healthy social network of family and friends.
Go to them when you need help and support. Be there for them when they need the
same.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t work out this often. Start small. Baby steps rule. Read my article on the 12 Week Jumpstart To Exercise plan, to give you an idea how to get started from couch to gym (note you don’t need a gym in order to work out effectively).
  • 6. Optimise your elimination Remember, this is about optimising your body and giving you the best chance to beat cancer or prevent it. Your elimination organs include: - Skin (work up a sweat each day) - Lungs (optimise your breathing: diaphgramatic breathing works wonders in more ways than one) - Kidneys (drink your body’s needed amount of water, exercise regularly to increase blood flow to your kidneys and other organs) - Lymphatics (exercise, massage, dry skin brushing - are great ways to keep your lymphatics draining optimally) - Bowel (a healthy nutritional plan with more plants than animal, optimal hydration, regular exercise will ensure your bowel stays healthy and regular) - Liver (your liver is more than just a ‘detox’ organ. It is a vital organ that performs many functions crucial to life, and in fact January was ‘Love Your Liver Month’ - look out on this blog for tips on how to love your liver). Needless to say if you happen to need chemotherapy or radiotherapy then all your organs of elimination and detox must be working in top form otherwise you will accumulate poisons in your body, which is not conducive to your healing. Optimise your Sleep Melatonin, released by your pineal gland only in the dark, apparently has some anti-tumor activity: some studies showed that people with low levels of melatonin developed breast, colon cancer more than those with normal levels. So, do your best to sleep at night, in pitch dark. If you work night shifts and can’t do anything about it, try to simulate dark when you get home, by using black-out blinds to darken your bedroom, switching off every device or gadget that has a light. Read the series of articles I’ve written on sleep for more on this.
  • 7. Optimise your Sunshine (vitamin D) This humble hormone vitamin only recently started gaining the recognition it deserves. As was described in the American Journal of Public Health as far back as 2006, “vitamin D deficiency may account for several thousand premature deaths from colon,12 breast,13,14 ovarian,15 and prostate16 cancer annually.17 This discovery creates a new impetus for ensuring adequate vitamin D intake in order to reduce the risk of cancer.” It’s easy to find out your vitamin D levels - get your doctor to arrange for you to have some blood tests measuring your 25 (OH) Vitamin D. Read this article to discover what normal levels should be and how you can optimise your vitamin D. Optimise your Gut Health Even with the healthiest diet in the world, if your gut is unhealthy, you can’t properly absorb what you do eat. So you want to optimise your gut health in order to increase your chances of beating cancer. - Eat fibre (plants contain fibre, so eat lots of green leafy vegetables each day, among other things). Fibre also feeds your ‘friendly bacteria’ and helps them thrive, which boosts your immunity. - Exercise regularly - this increases blood flow to your gut, helping it function better. - Drink lots of water- otherwise you’ll get constipated, especially if you’re eating a lot of fibre. It’ll turn into a brick in your large bowel unless you’re drinking enough water too. - Avoid processed sugar, which irritates your bowel lining and encourages the growth of harmful bacteria and fungus in your body. - Take probiotic supplements anytime you take a course of antibiotics as antibiotics kill off your friendly bacteria (probiotics), thus leaving you weaker than before. Optimise your oxygenation Cancer generates its energy best in an area devoid of oxygen. So to beat the sucker, make sure you’ve got lots of oxygen in your system by: -- Regular Exercise -- Deep breathing exercises several times each day
  • 8. -- Having a good belly laugh each day -- Stop smoking!!!! You’re killing not just yourself but those around you, with this disgusting dangerous habit. Seek help. Or find a good enough reason to stop. Many doctors surgeries provide Smoking Cessation services. Many smokers stopped smoking when their reason for stopping became bigger than their desire for nicotine. For some it was the experience of their first heart attack, for some it was the realisation that passive smoking was killing their children same as them. Whatever it takes, stop smoking! Optimise your social health A cancer diagnosis can be devastating not just for the patient but also for friends and relatives. If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, surround yourself with people who are positive and hopeful. Refuse sympathy for it is not an emotion that’s conducive for your healing. Last thing you need is people feeling sorry for you. Surround yourself with people who have a fighting attitude as in ‘you can beat this, we know you can’. Don’t go through life alone. Cultivate a healthy social network of family and friends. Go to them when you need help and support. Be there for them when they need the same.
