Getting your message across is about how to be effective during a media interview. Tips and pearls derived from years of trial and error. This presentation was given by Dr. Alan Bauman at the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery Annual Scientific Meeting in San Francisco in October 2013.

  • 4. PRESS INTERVIEW BASICS • Prepare Three Key Messages • Succinct • Lively Examples / Facts • Anticipate Difficult Questions • Do your research – understand the nature of the show and viewership ALAN J. BAUMAN M.D., A.B.H.R.S.

CHOOSE YOUR WORDS CAREFULLY • Succinct • average TV sound bite = 7 seconds • Compelling • Treat every interview as if it was live (extra web content) • Don’t Ramble • Speak Clearly & Enthusiastically • Avoid Jargon, use simple language • Do not answer “yes” or “no” ALAN J.   • 7. VOCAL TONE & INFLECTION • Clearly, enthusiastically • Avoid a monotonous tone of voice • Tone should reflect the excitement, passion, concern and engagement in the topic • Emphasize important points vocally ALAN J. BAUMAN M.D., A.B.H.R.S.

BODY LANGUAGE / HAND GESTURES • Movement animates the discussion and supports your view • Works on radio as well as TV • Practice standing and sitting, relaxed but energenic • In a chair… don’t swivel, lean away, fidget, rock, tap, etc. • DO NOT cross your arms (defensive/closed off) • EYE CONTACT • TV interview: eyes on the reporter • Don’t stare off, to the side or up • Exception: Studio Interview via Satellite (look straight in) ALAN J.
