When was Energy Star® Created? • By 1995, program significantly expanded • Included energy efficient products • Developed labeling standard • First products included computers and printers • Second generation included HVAC and new homes • Now adopted by over 30 countries (EU+ Taiwan, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Canada) Information courtesy of We can lower the temperature number dramatically just by switching from Fahrenheit to Celsius.

What is Energy Star®? • Purposely designed to always ‘up the ante’ • 2005 - Congress enacted the Energy Policy Act which is (more clearly) designed to: • • • • Promote energy efficient products and buildings Reduce all energy consumption Reduce pollution Become the standard for highest energy efficiency Information courtesy of Wind power is very popular because it has a lot of fans.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Energy use in homes, buildings, and industry account for two thirds of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States ENERGY STAR® has been instrumental in reducing this energy use in order to realize significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions Information courtesy of I am not lazy.   12. 12. Performance metrics 1. U-Factor: The resistance of temperature transfer through the materials used. The lower the number, the better resistance. 2. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): The amount of heat felt from the rays of the sun. The lower the number, the better the resistance. 3. Air Leakage: The amount of air allowed through the material. Measured in cfm/sf². Q. How did Benjamin Franklin feel when he discovered electricity? A. Shocked!

  14. 14. Performance Metrics In addition to U-Factor, SHGC and Air Infiltration rating standards, Energy Star® has also implemented installation standards for windows. Transformers hum because they don’t know the words
  15. 15. How will it affect us? 1. Package glass options which will meet requirements in all Energy Star® zones 2. Update ordering systems to accurately show test data Due to the current economic climate the "Light at the end of the tunnel" has been switched off.
