I showed Green Thing (http://www.dothegreenthing.com) to all the kids and teachers at St. Paul's Whitechapel Primary School in assembly and then worked with year 4 class and their teachers on a Recycled/Reborn project. I showed this presentation and then the children wrote down and presented their ideas for creating beautiful new things out of old things.

  • Dothegreenthing Green Thing, doing the Green Thing at Green Thing (Dothegreenthing.com) Not sure what happened to transcript below - here are talk notes to slides:

    2. These are 7 things you can do to lead a greener life (visit http://www.dothegreenthing.com to explain)

    3. We're going to concentrate on this one

    4. Each action has 3 related actions on the site (visit http://www.dothegreenthing.com to explain)

    5. We're going to concentrate on this one

    6. We created a Recycled/Reborn logo - can you spot what or rather who it's made of?

    11. Who here has seen WALL.E? We throw lots of things away and if we're not careful our world really will look like this.

    12. In some parts it already does!

    13. Everything we made uses energy which produces CO2 - this is bad for the environment because it causes extreme climate change

    14. It also means constantly digging up new resources from the ground - and we haven't got nearly enough left in the earth

    15. We need to use less things to begin with - not buy things we don't need. When we do buy them we need to All-Consume them (e.g. use up everything and waste nothing - like those leftovers in the fridge). And when we do need to throw them away we need to do it the right way - and recycle

    16. Recycling works like this...and means new things can be made out of old things. Now lets look at the video...

    17. [Show video] Now let's look at some things people have made by re-using or re-cycling old things

    18. What's this? And what do you think it's made of?

    20. How about this?

    21. What do you think this necklace is made of?

    23. And these?

    25. And these trainers?

    27. How about these pencils?

    29. Or this designer handbag?

    30. The handbag was crocheted using recycled plastic bags

    31. Can anyone tell what this shed is made of.

    33. What's this sculpture of? And what's it made out of?

    35. This is amazing, it's a real temple in Thailand - any idea what it's built out of?

    36. The 'Temple of a million bottles' near Bangkok is made from around 1.5 million recycled bottles. Not just sustainable building materials but also the walls are decorated with intricate bottle cap mosaics. The template was started in 1984 by one monk who was sick and tired of all the bottles thrown away on nearby land!

    37. These old beer barrels have been turned into a flower pot train

    38. What do you think this is?

    39. Church bells!

    40. Made from old car wheel rims.

    41. Work in pairs and think of things you see around you that are thrown away. then think about what new and beautiful things you could make them into. Write down your ideas and draw pictures too. It could be musical instruments from trash. Or new toys / sculptures from junk. Or poems or song lyrics from old words. etc
