Marriage traditions in Cyprus match-making <ul><li> Many years ago the way to get married was through match-making. </li></ul><ul><li>The proposal was made by the groom’s family. </li></ul><ul><li>Match-making “season: </li></ul><ul><li>during Carnival and the week </li></ul><ul><li>before Lent. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Then five single girls make five </li></ul><ul><li>crosses with red ribbon at the </li></ul><ul><li>mattress’s corners and center </li></ul><ul><li>so that the couple will sleep the “ sleep of the blessed”. </li></ul>Weddings were on Sundays . Preparations though started on Thursday. Men carried the bridal mattress at the brides house. The bride’s friends helped with the stuffing of the bridal mattress and spreading three white bed sheets
  4. 4. Her entire dowry was then placed in baskets and positioned where everyone could see it. Her friends dance the traditional dance for the dowry called “xoros ths proikas”
  5. 5. On Saturday, seven friends will fill their baskets with wheat they will wash it, take it to the bride’s house to prepare the traditional wedding meal called < Resi>.
  6. 6. <ul><li>On Sunday, </li></ul><ul><li>the dressing of </li></ul><ul><li>the bride begins at noon. </li></ul><ul><li>The brides friends dance holding the brides clothes high in the air. </li></ul>Outside, the violinists will be playing the music for the < dance of the clothes>

To the wedding venue <ul><li>When the bride is fully dressed, her mother is </li></ul><ul><li>summoned to be beside her daughter during </li></ul><ul><li>the last emotional moments before her girl left </li></ul><ul><li>“ home” to her new “home”.Both parents will give </li></ul><ul><li>their blessing to their daughter </li></ul>
  8. 8. The groom prepares by getting dressed in his  suit by the best man. The groom sits in a chair and his best man proceeds to shave his face in what is referred to as &quot;the last shave.“ .
  9. 9. <ul><li>The bride is then escorted to the church by her father, accompanied by music. </li></ul><ul><li>The Crowning </li></ul><ul><li>The bride and </li></ul><ul><li>groom wear </li></ul><ul><li>headbands </li></ul><ul><li>called stefana. </li></ul>
  10. 10. <ul><li>On leaving the church </li></ul><ul><li>you will be presented with “ koufetta”, </li></ul><ul><li>sugared almonds, in </li></ul><ul><li>small bag containing </li></ul><ul><li>an odd number of </li></ul><ul><li>almonds. </li></ul><ul><li>An odd number can not </li></ul><ul><li>be divided up, showing </li></ul><ul><li>the unity of the couple .  </li></ul>

The wedding party <ul><li>The groom’s mother </li></ul><ul><li>will be waiting in </li></ul><ul><li>the house to cense </li></ul><ul><li>the newly-weds and </li></ul><ul><li>to give the groom a </li></ul><ul><li>pomegranate to </li></ul><ul><li>break, symbolizing </li></ul><ul><li>prosperity, success </li></ul><ul><li>and strength . </li></ul>
  12. 12. <ul><li>Partying, with music and </li></ul><ul><li>dancing, starts then. </li></ul><ul><li>The bride and groom will </li></ul><ul><li>dance the well known </li></ul><ul><li>“ dance of the </li></ul><ul><li>married couple” </li></ul><ul><li>while the wedding </li></ul><ul><li>guests will pin banknotes </li></ul><ul><li>to the couple’s garments </li></ul><ul><li>which </li></ul><ul><li>was the habit of making </li></ul><ul><li>gifts to the newly weds. </li></ul>
