MOBILE WIRELESS

  1. 1. MOBILE WIRELESS How do you get Mobile Wireless Internet in your RV? “Get an EVDO card” You can have wireless broadband internet access to your Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux laptop or desktop computer. Insert an EVDO Card into your laptop and, seconds later, you are connected to the internet at DSL-like speed. EVDO or Evolution Data Only/Evolution Data Optimized provides fast wireless broadband (3G) internet service directly to your laptop. You take the internet with you and surf the web in your car, on the train, in the airport, at a convention, on the road in your RV.. You need a contract with Verizon or Sprint. The cost is $60/month

  3. 3. SPRINT EVDO Cards
  4. 4. Which Provider should I use: Verizon or Sprint? That is like asking what bottled water should I drink. They are all similar and provide relatively equal service. Everyone has his or her own preference. One consideration might be LOCATION. In some case, Verizon is stronger in certain areas and Sprint in others. The bottom line is they are both good and competitive.
  5. 5. Which EVDO card should I use: Tough Question! New EVDO cards are introduced as often as PC’s. Are the newest one’s better? Some say yes, others say no. A bigger question might be should I get a: •USB card •PC Card (PCMCIA) •Express Card USB: Latest innovation. Plug into a USB port. Can be easily switched between desktop computers and laptops. The downside is they tie up a USB port. They also stick out and are somewhat fragile, so are more subject to damage than PC Cards. PC Card: Laptops have PCMCIA slots, but desktops do not. The advantage is they do not tie up a USB port and they are inside a slot so they do not stick out much. Downside is they cannot be used in a desktop PC. Express Card: New Laptops do NOT have PC Card slots, only Express Card slots (smaller than PC Card slots). All the same Pros / Cons apply as PC Cards.
  6. 6. LATEST USB INNOVATIONS from VERIZON Novatel USB727 BASKING RIDGE, N.J. and SAN DIEGO, Sept. 27 -- Verizon Wireless, the leading wireless company with the nation's most reliable wireless voice and data network, today announced the availability of the USB727 Modem. Developed by Novatel Wireless, a leading provider of wireless broadband solutions, and carrying the distinction of being the world's smallest Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) Revolution A (Rev. A) modem stick, the USB727 features an integrated microSD(TM) slot, allowing for the seamless storage and transport of up to 4 GB of files, photos or videos. USB727 Modem will be available on October 5.The USB727 is designed to work with any computing device equipped with a Type A USB port -- including most desktops, notebooks, and tablet PCs -- and provides on-the-go access to Verizon Wireless' national high-speed wireless broadband network. With out-of-box support for most operating systems, including Windows® (Vista, XP, 2000), Mac® and Linux, the USB727 enables Verizon Wireless customers to stay connected to online resources with speeds and performance similar to those of traditional cable or DSL connections. The USB727 is optimized for Verizon Wireless' EV-DO Rev. A network and the company's BroadbandAccess service which provides average download speeds of 600 kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits and average upload speeds of 500-800 kbps. Verizon Wireless customers with the USB727 can download a 1 Megabyte e-mail attachment -- the equivalent of a small PowerPoint® presentation or a large PDF file -- in about eight seconds and upload the same-sized file in less than 13 seconds.Designed to be extremely durable and fit comfortably in any pocket, the USB727 combines a variety of innovative features into its tiny form factor, including an integrated dual-band diversity antennae system with flip-up antennae to maximize data speed performance and provide a strong network signal reception. VZAccess Manager Software is included to simplify set-up and navigation through the USB727's features.
  7. 7. LATEST USB INNOVATIONS from SPRINT Novatel U727 The new Sprint U727 made by Novatel is quite impressive... Its tiny and shiny! Sprint's U727 comes with a first-of-its-kind "diversity loop antenna" designed to improve upon signal capture compared to flag-style flip-up antennas of other devices. Aside from its size, for Windows users there is not much else to offer compared to the CDU680 or even the older U720. Like the other devices, the U727 comes with Sprint's connection manager and offers Location- based GPS services. For Linux users, the U727 is the first device to ship from Sprint with support for Linux (however, the Franklin CDU-680 does offer Linux Support too). Its not a GUI connection manager, and there are no GPS functions, but at least Linux users don't have to get creative to connect with the U727, as with past devices. The MicroSD memory slot is impressive. This is the first "2 in 1" device, that allows you to have a powerful EVDO modem and a thumbdrive in one device. Sprint ships it with NO memory, you have to purchase your own MicroSD memory to use this impressive feature. For a limited time, purchase the U727 from 3Gstore.com and we will include a 1GB MicroSD for no extra charge!
  8. 8. LATEST USB INNOVATIONS from SPRINT Franklin CDU680 The Franklin CDU-680 was released September 2007 and it has been the EVDO Modem that many people have been waiting for. The CDU-680 is around 1/3 the size of previous USB Modems (like the Novatel U720 or the Sierra AirCard 595U). In addition to its much smaller size, Franklin has added many new features not previously found on an EVDO USB modem. Features Include: :•EVDO Rev-A Device •Approximately 1/3 of the size of previous USB Modems •Built-in 64mb flash drive •Built-in GPS •Antenna Port for external antennas and amplifiers •Windows XP/Vista, Mac OS X, Linux Connection Managers already loaded on installed flash drive (no need to carry a CD with you). Also Getting Started PDF Pre-Loaded on flash drive. •Full Mac OS X Connection Manager including GPS Support •Swivel USB Connector •USB only Requires a Max of 500ma - Y Adapter Cable is not typically needed, however one is included for additional power and better positioning of CDU-680 The built-in 64mb flash drive isn't a lot of storage, but does include the connection manager installers for Windows XP, Vista (32 bit or 64 bit), Mac OS X and Linux. This is a pretty impressive use for the flash drive. You can walk up to almost any Windows, Mac or Linux computer with a USB port (any laptop or desktop) and have everything that you need to connect to Sprint's mobile broadband network. No need to carry a CD - in fact a CD is not even included in the package.
  9. 9. USB Size Comparizons FranklinCDU680 and Sierra 595U Swivel. This ability to rotate vertically allows them to get out of the way so they are not damaged as easily.
  10. 10. OPTIONS EVDO Antennas and Amplifiers provide greater signal strength when signals are weak. EVDO Routers allow multiple PC’s to get wireless internet from 1 EVDO card.
  11. 11. Where should you get information and purchase EVDO Cards? INFORMATION You can set limited and biased information from Sprint or Verizon. Unfortunately Sprint and Verizon staff are sales folks ,not technical experts. It is better to go to a great website called: http://www.evdoinfo.com/ This is the “mother ship” of EVDO information. It contains EVDO Forums, EVDO Maps, EVDO Blogs, and The 3G Store. Use this as your information source. PURCHASE Many people go to their carrier: •Verison •Sprint While there is nothing wrong with this, I have purchased my EVDO cards from “The 3G Store” which is part of the info website described above. A shortcut to the store is: http://3gstore.com/ Cardes purchased from the 3G Store are cheaper than from the carriers, and they handle the paperwork. They are fully authorized to do this for Sprint and Verizon. ALSO, they support and continue to support you when you cannot figure things out and when things go wrong.
  12. 12. A Word about Networks Evolution-Data Optimized or Evolution-Data only, abbreviated as EV-DO or EVDO and often EV, is a telecommunications standard for the wireless transmission of data through radio signals, typically for broadband Internet access. Wireless Internet download speeds have evolved over the past few years: •1xRTT: 50Kbps - 100Kbps Download (Orig cell standard) •EVDO Rev 0: 400kbps - 700kbps Download (Also called G2.5) •EVDO Rev A: 500Kbps - 1,000Kbps Download (Also called G3) •EVDO Rev B: a future very high speed network for video. Prior to 2004, folks used their cell phone as a modem to get on the internet when on the road. They were using 1xRTT technology. It was painfully slow and few folks used it. Starting in 2005, Verison and Sprint began selling EVDO cards deploying EVDO Rev 0 technology. This was called “G 2 1/2” because it was slower than the promised “G-3 broadband speed” which was in common use in Japan. Starting in 2007, Verison and Sprint began selling (and upgrading existing EVDO cards) EVDO Rev A technology, which promised true “broadband” speeds. That rollout is still taking place, and will not likely be complete for another 2 years. Most of the EVDO cards sold today are EVDO Rev A capable. Make sure any new card you purchase is Rev A capable. When you purchase a EVSO card, it will connect to the fastest network it can find. First: EVDO Rev A Next: EVDO Rev 0 Finally: 1xRTT What you will usually find, is when you are in big cities, you will be on EVDO Rev A. When you are near freeways, you will be connected to EVDO Rev 0. Finally when you are in the boonies, you will be connected to 1XRTT. That’s life.
  13. 13. A Word about Networks EVDO Info website which displays Verizon and Sprint EVDO Rev A and Rev 0 locations. The quality is marginal. http://evdomaps.com/ Also the vendors have coverage maps for what they are worth. SPRINT: http://www.sprint.com/index.html VERIZON: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/index.html AT&T: http://www.wireless.att.com/home/ HOW ABOUT USING YOUR CELL PHONE AS A MODEM FOR YOUR LAPTOP Yes, this works and is used by many folks, but it is not a serious contender. There are two problems: •When you are on the internet, your phone is unavailable for calls •You cannot get the fastest EVDO Rev A speeds (uses EVDO Rev 0) IS THERE ANYTHING BESIDES VERIZON AND SPRINT NO Serious contenders AT&T has the “edge” network. Used little because it is so slow (basically 1xRTT) They do very limited broadband at the moment, but they are improving service. There broadband network is called “3G Broadband Connect”. It is NOT EVDO Rev A. The IPhone uses AT&T. The biggest problem with the IPhone is wireless speed issues. A new service called HELIO is available, but it is NOT a EVDO card for a laptop, but high speed wireless for mobile devices, such as cell phones and communication devices.
