Score earned by Students in the mobile portal through a 3G handset can be Administration Console The student learning activities and performance can be monitored through the administration console. 3G Mobile learning Platform Server Hardware which hole the (1) 3G Mobile learning portal and (2) 3G Mobile learning Platform (Internet Interface) SMS Gateway  SMS message can be sent to the student(s) through the platform to send the prize coupon for quiz winner.   6. 6. “3G Mobile Learning Platform” for the Mobile Services of the “3G Cyberport” Project 4.1 User requirements collection In the first week after the project kick-off, the project team will meet with the users to understand the actual and real requirements for the design of the proposed system so as to maximize the benefits of the proposed 3G application to the Cyberport. 4.2 System Design It will take around 1-2 weeks for the detailed design of the proposed system. The design will involve the functional specification and the integration with the operators 4.3 System development It will take 2-3 weeks for the development of the proposed application. 4.4 Customized-installation and integration After the system development, integration has to be performed with the 3G network. Other overheads including office space resource, office stationeries, equipment cost (workstations and mobile handset), supervision and consultation by senior staff were not counted in the requested amount. These overheads will be absorbed by the ETIC as our continuous support to the 3G applications development in Hong Kong. The clients include G2000, AIA, W3C, the HKU Libraries and so on. Please refer to Appendix B for the details of these cases. 7.2 DBS Bank 3G Mobile Banking In early 2005, we developed a mobile security module for a 3G Mobile banking solution for DBS Bank. Such project involved the development of three midlets for a J2ME mobile handset, which supports the bank an end-to-end authentication mechanism for the DBS mobile banking application. The three midlets had been implemented the client side procedures that include (1) new registration, (2) account login, and (3) change of password, as described in the FRS. The midlets were developed with compliance to MIDP2.0 and supporting xHTML browser. Copyright 2006 ETI Consulting Limited. All rights reserved. 8
  9. 9. “3G Mobile Learning Platform” for the Mobile Services of the “3G Cyberport” Project 7.3 Feasibility study of m-payment for EPS (2004) In 2004, a feasibility study had been conducted to evaluate the technical and commercial feasibility of launching a mobile micro payment service for EPS. The feasibility report and the prototype demo of mobile payment had been prepared in the project. 7.4 Wireless Application Enabling Center Form 2002 to 2004, a Wireless Application Enabling Center had been established to support the development of wireless applications on SMS and MMS messaging such as mobile catalogue, mobile finance and mobile school messaging…etc. The project was supported by the Trade and Industry Department of the HKSAR Government and the technologies developed in this center was successfully transferred to some local technology companies. 7.5 Development of Server Assist Wireless Public Key Infrastructure In 2002, the Innovation Technology Commission funded this project to develop a “Server Assist Wireless Public Key Infrastructure (SAWPKI)” for implementing PKI digital certificate on mobile device. Such technology is important because it enable using e-cert on mobile phone for a secure transaction, which is the only way to comply with the Electronic Transaction Ordinance. The technology had been deployed for the Wireless PKI Solution for HKU ESD service in 2003 as well as for the security module for the recent DBS 3G mobile banking.   10. 10. “3G Mobile Learning Platform” for the Mobile Services of the “3G Cyberport” Project Appendix B: Customer Success Stories 7.6 G2000 - Discovers a new and better marketing channel In November 2004, G2000, a HK clothing chain for fashion apparels, launched a special new shop promotion utilizing the EC-Promotion service. During the promotional campaign, G2000 sent Mobile Coupons (EC-Coupons) in Short Messaging Service (SMS) format to the mobile phones of selected customers via the EC- Promotion service. The customers could then use the EC-Coupons when purchasing at the designated new stores and get discounts or gifts. The campaign was a success: many customers showed up at the new stores with their EC- Coupons, and they liked the idea a lot. G2000 later also used EC-Promotion service for their Christmas promotions. EC-Coupon is just one component of the Marketing Campaign Solution. The Marketing Campaign Solution provides a total solution for implementing a marketing campaign and significantly improves the hit rate of direct marketing campaigns. 7.7 American International Assurance - From Email to SMS The EC-Communicator Service allows AIA to send out multiple, customized SMS messages through a single email. The service provides an easy-to-use Integration channel to submit large numbers of SMS. AIA only has to prepare a CSV file of the SMS contents and receivers, attach in an email and send it to a dedicated mailbox. The service also provides AIA mechanism to delay some SMS submission, confirm the SMS submission and retrieve delivery report through an External Interface. 7.8 World Wide Web Consortium - Online Event Registration/Ticket Selling for W3C The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) uses the EC-Payment service for the online registration/payment of their One-day Semantic Web Symposium. As the attendants register and pay the registration fees at the W3C website, electronic tickets (EC-Ticket) will be sent to the attendants' mobile phones. At the event reception, the attendants could show their electronic tickets for admission. The EC-Payment service provides rich features on payment options, transaction reporting and event notification. 7.9 HKU Libraries - Notification solution for HKU Libraries Copyright 2006 ETI Consulting Limited.   12. 12. “3G Mobile Learning Platform” for the Mobile Services of the “3G Cyberport” Project Students of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) now get instant text messages on overdue library books, book reservations and new book announcements, thanks to EC-NewsExpress service. The library messaging service allows the HKU Libraries to send text messages on overdue books, book reservations and new book announcements. HKU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Lap-Chee Tsui, said that the new service showed the commitment of the university to keep up with the most recent technological applications. At the Launching Ceremony of the service on December 2, 2004, the Legislative Councilor representing the IT sector, Mr. Sin Chung Kai, praised HKU's adoption of the text messaging solution: "I believe that this kind of new application will be extensively deployed and will generate great benefit to the entire community".
