  • The Broadband market is changing. Wireless is appearing in an ever increasing number of consumer electronics devices. Over a million people in the UK have a wireless laptop and wireless games console. Many of these will have wi-fi phones over the coming months. The value of Wireless in devices is evolving to MP3 music players, video players and cameras. One of the most intense users of Openzone hotspots are the sports journalists taking digital photos at events and instantly streaming them to sports desk. Image files are so large on camera phones that cellular technologies struggle to share or publishing them. Wi-Fi/Wimax Converged products such as Airspan USB dongle and iRiver G10 appearing. The first Wimax cellular phones appearing courtesy of Samsung in Korea. Broadband is moving from 20M homes to 60M individuals and it’s starting with Wi-Fi.
  • FMCA Members represent 1 in 6 of world’s telecom subscribers proliferation of Wi-Fi mid-range cellular handsets will be irreversible 25 announced Members representing circa 800 million customers Driving productisation of standards Successfully driven tier 1 Wi-Fi handset availability ‘ We believe the FMCA will encourage other major telecom operators from around the world to drive the development of Convergence services’ ( Visiongain 3/05)
  • So what has BT been up to? We’ve launched Fixed Wireless Rural Broadband services at 5.8Ghz for Consumers & Businesses to the Wholesale & Retail markets but that opportunity is largely over in the UK now that Broadband is available to 99.8% of the population. We’ve started to look at the potential of Mobile Wireless Broadband and have run trials at a number of candidate frequencies for Wimax. We have a small user trial in Birmingham and Belfast in the UK at 2.5Ghz for business users. Customers have the Navini Pre-Wimax desktop modem or PCMCIA card We have a lab trial of the WiBro technology at 2.3Ghz with Samsung where we have been able to trial PDA’s and PCMCIA cards. We have also trialled Airspan’s 3.5Ghz portable 802.16 2004 solution with desktop and lampost mounted units.

    • Hotspots are be linked together to create a ‘cloud’ of access that’s ‘always on’
    • Devices connect securely via this ‘cloud’ to transmit and receive information from city council applications, to access the Internet, or to conduct voice calls
