Connect your laptop, iPhone, iTouch, EeePC, WLAN-digital camera, internet Tablet or any other WLAN device to internet easily and securely using your own mobile phone's 3G internet connection. JoikuSpot turns your S60 mobile phone instantly to a Wi-Fi HotSpot. You will carry internet in your pocket. With JoikuSpot, you can share your mobile phone’s 3G internet connection over WLAN to any device. As JoikuSpot is software based, no cables or additional hardware are needed to establish the internet connection. You can forget hard-to-use Bluetooth, iRda and PCSuite cable connections and costly fixed hotspots and USB modems by simply using your mobile phone’s 3G connection as a WLAN based internet gateway. Multiple WLAN devices can connect to internet in parallel through one JoikuSpot access point. Your choice if you wish to share your 3G bandwith! We recommend unlimited mobile data plans for cost-efficient use of JoikuSpot mobile WLAN HotSpot. You can use JoikuSpot for web access even in your sailing boat! The “Joiku Vision” is to liberate Mobile Internet everywhere on this planet through our secure Mobile HotSpot software client "JoikuSpot". Joikusoft is a largest and most rapidly growing JoikuSpot 2.30 Whitepaper (c) Joikusoft Oy Ltd. 2008 JoikuSpot is a registered trademark of Joikusoft Oy Ltd.
  2. 2. Mobile HotSpot Operator (MHO) on the planet Earth. Joikusoft was the first in the world to unveil and bring to the market a Mobile HotSpot software solution for Nokia S60 Smartphones. Get your personal secure mobile Wi-Fi HotSpot on-the-go to your mobile phone at www.joikuspot.com and carry Mobile Internet in your pocket. We believe in WLAN/Wi-Fi as the easiest, fastest and most rapidly spreading way to make an internet access from any device and any location. We believe in mobility and user independence of where they want to make their internet access. We believe that users, not some other controlling parties, shall have the control over their HotSpot use and we wish to offer the freedom of choice. The ultimate benefits of the solution include: - COST SAVINGS: No additional hardware or cables are needed between your JoikuSpot mobile phone and laptop or other portable WLAN device. For most cost efficient internet use we recommend an unlimited data plan (flat rate) with your mobile operator. - SECURITY: JoikuSpot is fully secured. You can use the maximum power offered by Symbian OS used in S60 Smartphones to secure your internet connection using JoikuSpot. - SPEED: WLAN connection between e.g. a laptop and your JoikuSpot device is many times faster than e.g. Bluetooth connection. The actual speed of internet use depends on your data plan and the network you are using. For optimal speed you should obtain e.g. a 2Mbit unlimited mobile data plan from your wireless operator, and access the web when covered by a 3G/3.5G network. - 100% WIRELESS: As the JoikuSpot solution is software-based and uses WLAN for connectivity, you actually need no additional connection cables or hardware to establish internet connection. Simply use your WLAN capable portable device (e.g. laptop) to scan the open JoikuSpot nearby, connect to JoikuSpot access point over WLAN, and start browsing the web using the JoikuSpot device’s 3G internet connection. JOIKUSPOT PREMIUM AND JOIKUSPOT LIGHT There are 2 versions of JoikuSpot software available; Premium and Light. The main difference between the products are that the Light version is offered as a FREE download, whereas Premium is more of a business class edition and commercial by nature. The Premium Edition contains all the Light functionality and in addition full support for all network access protocols including VPN and Outlook support for business class use. There is no forced landing page in Premium Edition. Both Editions come with same level of security and encryption to prevent unauthorized use. JoikuSpot 2.30 Whitepaper (c) Joikusoft Oy Ltd. 2008 JoikuSpot is a registered trademark of Joikusoft Oy Ltd.
  3. 3. JOIKUSPOT LIGHT EDITION JOIKUSPOT PREMIUM EDITION • HTTP(S) protocol support • All the Light functionality + • Support for 8 languages • Full support for all network access • WLAN access to internet with laptops, protocols such as VPN, Outlook, Skype, iPods, EeePCs and internet tablets Gmail, YouTube, IMAP, POP3, ... • 3G/3.5G/EDGE/GPRS support • No forced landing page • Secured access and user control • Purchase at www.joikushop.com • Multiple parallel connections • User definable access point and settings • GPS location mapping supporting MapSpot 1.00 • Quick fast-key install • Free download at www.joiku.com www.joiku.com www.joikushop.com USE CASES We know you have the use case of your own for JoikuSpot as only the imagination limits the possibilities, but here are a few good ones in addition to simply saving money and having to hassle around with wires; - Seamlessly connect your Apple iPod touch or iPhone to web via JoikuSpot and make it a 3G iPhone in a second! Apple iPods and Nokia Internet Tablets offer excellent and intuitive browsing experience, and Symbian Smartphone with JoikuSpot software makes the fast web connection over WLAN. WLAN is built in inside iPod touch and Nokia Internet Tablets, and there is no better way to connect them to web than JoikuSpot. The same applies for eeePCs. JoikuSpot 2.30 Whitepaper (c) Joikusoft Oy Ltd. 2008 JoikuSpot is a registered trademark of Joikusoft Oy Ltd.
  4. 4. - Imagine a business meeting, where you can simply place your Smartphone on the table, and ask everyone to wirelessly connect to internet via your phone’s JoikuSpot. No need for any wires, additional physical connectivity hardware or additional configurable access points. Your phone is enough to share the bandwidth to everyone and you save a lot of valuable business time. The laptops and external devices will see the JoikuSpot WLAN network and simply connect to internet using that. - Imagine your villa or summer cottage, and how much money you will save when you don’t need any equipment or connections installed or carried along there. Your phone goes with you and so does your laptop, and that’s enough to make a fast connection to web where ever you are as long as you are covered by a 3G, EDGE or GPRS data network. - HotSpots in airports, hotels, conference centers, cafes may be offered with quite costly rate and typically require configuration work, entering credit card details and in some cases even hassling around with wires to set-up. JoikuSpot saves you this hassle and the cost involved. - Surf the web while on the train or in the car (even though we don’t recommend this in case you are the driver). As long as under 3G, EDGE or GPRS data network coverage you can make most use of your train or car trips and use the internet wirelessly on your laptop the whole journey. JoikuSpot makes this possible. - While abroad, instead of using your own mobile subscription to connect to web, perhaps your local colleague or friend has a JoikuSpot and local mobile data plan to connect through. Turn your local colleagues mobile phone to your internet access point while travelling! - Happen to have a sailing boat? Brag to your friends for having an integrated Wi-Fi HotSpot in your sailing boat! - For corporates, you can just imagine the increase in employee productivity, when web access is made simple and fast everywhere where they happen to be. In addition your internal support staff can stop educating how to make the Bluetooth access to web while out of office. And you can get rid of USB modems and related cost! No need to mention, but you no longer need the PCSuite and cable connectivity. OPERATING PRINCIPLE JoikuSpot’s operating principle is simple: 1) Get JoikuSpot software (Light or Premium) from www.joikuspot.com. 2) JoikuSpot software is installed to a compatible S60 Smartphone (e.g. Nokia N95). 3) When switched on, JoikuSpot turns your phone instantly to a Wi-Fi HotSpot and starts to share your phone’s 3G/EDGE/GPRS internet connection over WLAN for external devices. The user can secure the connection using easy security settings (stop the client to change security settings). 4) External device(s) (e.g. laptop with WLAN, iPod, eeePC, Internet Tablet, …) may connect to your JoikuSpot now over WLAN, and use it as an internet gateway. 5) You are now connected to web using JoikuSpot device’s 3G internet connection. And JoikuSpot is running, not walking! JoikuSpot 2.30 Whitepaper (c) Joikusoft Oy Ltd. 2008 JoikuSpot is a registered trademark of Joikusoft Oy Ltd.
  5. 5. The below picture illustrates the high level functionality: WLAN 3G Device with JoikuSpot When JoikuSpot spreads across Smartphones, and JoikuSpot users carry their devices around with them, you may be positively surprised to find open JoikuSpots in public places such as train stations, airports, restaurants, conference centers, hotels, offices, cafes, shopping malls etc. Internet should be easily and cost-efficiently accessible everywhere, and Joikusoft aims to enable that. JOIKUSPOT AND MAPSPOT 1.00 JoikuSpot supports MapSpot 1.00. JoikuSpot users can be shown their exact HotSpot location on the first web landing page, when location data is available and published. MapSpot is a service offered to network operators with JoikuSpot. MapSpot communicates with external mapping and navigation services such as GoogleMaps, and shows the exact JoikuSpot HotSpot location to user on maps, or alternatively publishes open JoikuSpots on the world map. JoikuSpot Mobile HotSpot software that is installed to a mobile phone comes with built-in GPS support. When available, JoikuSpot client in the phone will post the GPS location of the HotSpot to the server side secure MapSpot engine, which in turn will process the JoikuSpot HotSpot location information and transform it visually to external mapping services such as GoogleMaps. The location of the HotSpot can be shown to user on the map e.g. at the first landing page JoikuSpot uses that is defined by the network operator with JoikuSpot. JoikuSpot 2.30 Whitepaper (c) Joikusoft Oy Ltd. 2008 JoikuSpot is a registered trademark of Joikusoft Oy Ltd.
  6. 6. With MapSpot, the JoikuSpot user can: * Spot his exact location on the external mapping services * Get directions with couple of clicks, when JoikuSpot location is set as a starting point * Find businesses and points of interests near-by the JoikuSpot location MapSpot works in joint with JoikuSpot software client in GPS capable devices and is free to JoikuSpot users. MapSpot is offered to network operators for commercial licencing in the context of distribution of operator’s own branded Joiku HotSpots. MapSpot can be easily integrated to operator’s own back-end server systems, and can serve the operator customers in the first landing page the user sees. MapSpot for Operators can be bundled with SpotLog management and reporting tool with visual mapping capabilities, where operators can get extensive amount of insight for their internal use regarding their HotSpot users and whereabouts of the usage. MapSpot licencing requires custom integration to operators system, or alternatively it can be offered as a hosted service on JoikuSpot server, with dynamically generated monthly usage reports per operator requirements, or operator direct access to the tool. 7. 7. JOIKUSPOT SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS JoikuSpot installs to Smartphones with Symbian v3 OS with WLAN and 3G capability. JoikuSpot needs to be turned on to share the internet access. Please note that when you turn JoikuSpot on, you allow external devices to access internet via your phone. The device making the connection via JoikuSpot (e.g. laptop or iPod touch) needs to have a WLAN capability and WLAN needs to be turned on. The WLAN device needs to support Ad Hoc WLAN networks (Infrastructure mode is not supported in current JoikuSpot releases) JoikuSpot device needs to have a data plan with a mobile operator, and the internet connection needs to be enabled. Joikusoft recommends an unlimited data plan with 3G connectivity for most cost-efficient and convenient use of the solution. When operated, the JoikuSpot client needs to be under coverage of accessible wireless 3G/3.5G or EDGE or GPRS network. JoikuSpot needs the phones WLAN resource to make the connection. Please make sure no other applications (e.g. SIP or mapping client) is reserving the phones WLAN connection. If you use security firewalls in your phone, it may prevent establishing an Ad Hoc WLAN connection. Please lower the security level. Please make sure there is no competing WLAN base stations in the same frequency. If there is, your WLAN device may get confused which base station to connect to. Ad Hoc WLAN networks operate in 3 different frequencies. JoikuSpot Light Edition is signed as Symbian freeware. Your device needs to be set to allow installing a Symbian freeware signed software in order to run the software. To use JoikuSpot you need to agree to the terms of use of the JoikuSpot. Your acceptance is prompted the first time you open the JoikuSpot client. Joikusoft is not liable for any misuse, mal-functionality, compatibility or use cost of or inability to use the JoikuSpot solution. JoikuSpot Light Edition software comes on “as is” basis, is freeware by nature, and there is no support of any kind provided for the use or installing of the software. The detailed FAQ can be found at: http://www.joiku.com/index.php?action=about&mode=joikuspotFAQ . Also hundreds of useful Joiku Reviews from users of JoikuSpot are posted at www.joiku.com. The old firmware versions are lacking the technology to enable WLAN sharing. COST SAVING AND BUSINESS CASE IDEAS JoikuSpot can save users money. You may consider whether you need a physical internet connection at all (e.g. ADSL) in remote locations such as your summer cottage, villa or small office, in case these premises are covered by 3G networks. You may further consider do you any more wish to pay for the costly internet services offered by many hotels or other fixed commercial HotSpots. Your peers, colleagues, friends or family members may save money in mobile connectivity and data transfer costs when using your JoikuSpot as an internet gateway. As the cost of mobile data traffic is beared by the JoikuSpot mobile phone owner, we highly recommend unlimited data plans with your wireless operator. In typical cases with unlimited data plans, all the surfing and mobile data use is covered by your plan. To avoid unpleasant surprises with your operator’s mobile data bill, Joikusoft strongly recommends you to carefully familiarize yourself with all aspects regarding your mobile phones mobile data costs, both in domestic and international use contexts.
