In 2003 social bookmarking websites like Delicious, provided a way for its users to add “tags” Delicious also provided browseable aggregated views of the bookmarks of all users featuring a particular tag.
The success of Flickr and the influence of Delicious popularized the concept, and other social softwarewebsites – such as YouTube, Technorati, and Last.fm – also implemented tagging. "Labels" in Gmail are similar to tags.

Folksonomy A folksonomy is a system of classification derived from the practice and method of collaboratively creating and managing tags to annotate and categorize content Some websites include tag clouds as a way to visualize tags in a folksonomy.
