    Notes on slide 1

Hi, I’m Andrew Miller, a founding member of the Columbus Social Media Café, a social justice and technology activist and community organizer. I’m here to introduce you to the Digitalocracy, the next evolution of democracy.

So, what is it? Well, for starters it is a social movement away from rigid institutions and towards self organizing for the greater good. Many of you are likely inclined towards this because it’s how you already function.

Instead of waiting for a particular business, non-profit or government agency to take action on issues the Digitalocracy are taking action themselves. Crowd-sourcing solutions to immediate and long term problems.

The principles of the Digitalocracy are not exactly new but are bearing themselves out in interesting ways throughout the world. I’ll spend the next few minutes describing these and giving some examples.

First and most important is that every human being is equal, period. Before we move on I want you to ponder that for a couple of seconds.

Next is that we strengthen human rights through our actions. The action of any single individual is easily spread like wildfire across the digital domain. Be creative and make that message matter.

The freedom of thought and of communication are core human rights. The freedom to communicate our thoughts creates equality, builds collaborative opportunity and breaks down control structures. Our thoughts make us who we are.

Property rights must be secondary to human rights, social and cultural development. Intellectual property and physical property are not black and white ownership issues. We are not what we own but what we share.

Be a good steward of our world – tread lightly and leave no trace. This is not just an environmental and sustainability issue; but also about working for the greater good. Only be a beacon so as to attract other stars.

Be constructive instead of destructive. Create and elevate, recreate. Re-use of resources is both sustainable and invites previous users into collaboration through the repurposed resource.

Collaboration provides exponential returns: share and share alike. When you share you create a social bond and learning opportunity. Every collaboration offers opportunity for self improvement. Every bond a sense of ownership.

Boundaries to collaboration and innovation should always be removed. This means breaking down hierarchy and bureaucracy, being willing to listen, being open to new ideas and new sources.

Boundaries are meaningful only to the resources they limit. What happens to resources when you remove the boundaries tying them to a place, time or organizational structure? We ask you to free them now.

Social technology of any type must be open source. This isn’t just for software, but everything in your digital and analog worlds. Clear, honest open intentions lead to much more meaningful connections.

Radical transparency is the key to equality and understanding. Let’s get really honest, really open and really transparent. Not just government but business, organizations and individuals.

Do the right thing, always. People in rehabilitation are told to just do the next right thing and before they know it that becomes their way; perhaps we all need a little rehab.

An example of this ethos is tonight’s Ignite Columbus event. We have all come as individuals to learn, share, connect and grow our community through honest and meaningful dialogue.

Social Entrepreneurism is the organizational embodiment of Digitalocracy. From Craigslist to Kiva to LSSCO, social entrepreneurs measure their success by social impact - not just shareholder return.

The Digitalocracy are neither socialist nor libertarian, blue or red, we choose not to divide but to multiply. The Digitalocracy are people who are capable of envisioning a better, more positive world and working together to make that happen.

Photo Credits are thanks to the sharing made possible by the users who use Creative Commons licensing, Flickr and their massive online pool of millions of images. Their actions are in line with the Digitalocracy. Thank you so much for letting me share with you!
