  1. 1. BALANCING BARN BY MVRDV AND MOLEARCHITECTS
  2. 2. • The Barn is highly insulated, ventilated by a heat recovery system, warmed by a ground source heat pump, resulting in a high energy efficient building• The pitched roof, takes its references from the local building vernacular and reflects the surrounding nature and changing seasons.
  3. 3. The rooms are themed. Partly pixilated and enlarged cloud studies by John Constable andcountry scenes by Thomas Gainsborough are used as connecting elements between thepast and contemporary Britain, as carpets, wall papers and mounted textile wall-elements.
  4. 4. The interior is based on two main objectives:•The house is an archetypical two-person home, expanded in shape and contentso that it can equally comfortably accommodate eight. Two will not feel lost inthe space, and a group of eight will not feel too cramped.•A neutral, timeless timber is the backdrop for the interior, in which StudioMakkink & Bey have created a range of furnishings that reflect the designconcept of the Barn.
  5. 5. The exterior is covered in reflective metalsheeting - stainless steel by Aperam (a newcompany created through the spin-off or thestainless business of the ArcelorMittal Group)with reflective finish Ugibright®.

  8. 8. •The Barn is 30 meters long, with a 15 meters cantilever over a slope, plunging the househeadlong into nature.•The reason for this spectacular setting is the linear experience of nature. As the site slopes, andthe landscape with it, the visitor experiences nature first at ground level and ultimately at treeheight.•The linear structure provides the stage for a changing outdoor experience
  9. 9. •The volume, however, has a length of 30 metres. At themidpoint it starts to cantilever over the descending slope; abalancing act made possible by the rigid structure of thebuilding; resulting in 50% of the barn being in free space,and giving a wide view over the Suffolk landscape, adjacentlake and surrounding gardens

  16. 16. The central core is composed of lifts and provides themain structural element for resisting lateral loads.
  17. 17. •Its minimalist unbroken surfaces are cut away to open up thedouble-height terrace gardens at the corners, thus revealing(through the interlocking form and color) some hint of thecomplex spatial organization of living spaces that lie within.

Slip form• Formwork is raised vertically in a continuous process.•It is a method of vertically extruding a reinforced concrete section and is suitablefor construction of core walls in high-rise structures – lift shafts, stair shafts,towers, etc.•It is a self-contained formwork system and can require little crane time duringconstruction.•This is a formwork system which can be used to form any regular shape or core.•The formwork rises continuously, at a rate of about 300mm per hour, supportingitself on the core and not relying on support or access from other parts of thebuilding or permanent works.•The formwork has three platforms. The upper platform acts as a storage anddistribution area while the middle platform, which is the main working platform, is atthe top of the poured concrete level. The lower platform provides access for concretefinishing.

Benefits•Careful planning of construction process can achieve high production rates.•Slip form does not require the crane to move upwards, minimizing crane use.• Enhances main structure stability.•Slip form systems require a small but highly skilled workforce on site. •This formwork is more economical for buildings more than seven storeys high. •The structure being slipformed should have significant dimensions in both major axes to ensure stability of the system.

Safety•Working platforms, guard rails, ladders and wind shields are normally built into thecompleted system.•Less congested construction site due to minimal scaffolding and temporary works.•Completed formwork assembly is robust.•Strength of concrete in the wall below must be closely controlled to achieve stability duringoperation.•High levels of planning and control mean that health and safety are normally addressed fromthe beginning of the work.
